In "bedford avenue - brooklyn - ny," Bettina Johae explores the full length
of Bedford Avenue from Greenpoint to Sheepshead Bay. In this two-channel-
video-and-color-photography project that reveals the vividly multi-faceted
character of Brooklyn and its many different neighborhoods and communities,
Ms. Johae captures the essence of the visual richness of a single street,
traversing an entire metropolitan American borough.
Consisting of views from a round-trip bicycle ride taken by Ms. Johae in
November 2001, this project also questions the subjective perspectives that
individuals may have of a street functioning as a cross-section of a large,
vital municipality. Is Bedford Avenue the main drag of hipsters,
day-trippers, and evening adventurers? Is it the historical center of the
Orthodox Jewish community of Williamsburg? Is it an artery running through
Bedford-Stuyvesant? Or, is it merely a street in this German artist's
newly adopted neighborhood?
In "bedford avenue - brooklyn - ny," two video monitors simultaneously show
Ms. Johae's bicycle ride: one from Bedford Avenue's southern end and the
other from its northern end. The accompanying row of color c-print
photographs is taken from video stills depicting divergent parts of the
avenue (i.e., residential neighborhoods of different classes and ethnic
groups; industrial areas; vacant zones; agglomerations of car repair
garages, grocery stores, & churches; and other features that are revealed
according to the artist's personal perspective).
Ms. Johae, a Berlin-born and Chicago-, Berlin-, & New York-educated artist
and architect, is currently a DAAD* scholar based in New York City. Her
designs for museums and pavilions have won first prize in juried
competitions in Germany and Switzerland.
