Zappalorto' s multimedial work deals with the themes of identity and duality. Whereas the installations he produced in the early nineties referred loosely to the human body, 1993 saw the beginning of a series of self-portraits. The artist began to focus more intensely on the concepts of duality and opposites, the "I-you" dichotomy inside the individual' s identity and the conflict-ridden but fundamentally harmonic unity of opposites, both on a spiritual and sexual level.

The exhibition titled "Selfportrait - Flowers for Germany", presented by
Artinprogress, is the Berlin premiere of a selection of Ampelio Zappalorto's recent work.
Zappalorto' s multimedial work deals with the themes of identity and
duality. Whereas the installations he produced in the early nineties
referred loosely to the human body, 1993 saw the beginning of a series of
self-portraits.
The artist began to focus more intensely on the concepts of
duality and opposites, the "I-you" dichotomy inside the individual' s
identity and the conflict-ridden but fundamentally harmonic unity of
opposites, both on a spiritual and sexual level. In the "O" cycle (1995), a
kind of puzzle, Zappalorto sewed together photographs of himself and of his
partner, a form of synthesis of the "I" and the "other".
The works presented in this Berlin exhibition centre on the fragmentation of
the self. On two large-format photographic works, the artist appears in the
guise of two central figures of twentieth century history and art history:
first as Hitler, then as Beuys.
Also showing in the Artinprogress Gallery is Zappalorto' s Super 8 film
titled "S" (colour, 18 min.), in which the artist rediscovers his alter eg
o
in the form of his young daughter. The journey the two embark on together i
s
a metaphor for the experience of initiation. The same subject, bearing the
same title, also appears in a photograph included in the exhibition.
Ampelio Zappalorto is born 1956 in Vittorio Veneto (I); he lives and works
in Germany and Italy. His work has been on show throughout Europe, both in
individual and group exhibitions, including the XLV Venice Biennale.
