Outlet
is a new project by artists Eileen Simpson and Ben White
Eileen Simpson and Ben White’s work is a hybrid; it sits at the intersection
of art, design, music and IT systems exploring the potential of public
domain material, mining for out-of-copyright shellac 78s and film and
employing this material to initiate new collaborations with musicians,
designers, artists and curators.
Open Music Archive sources, digitises and distributes out-of-copyright sound
recordings – mainly 1920s and 30s blues, jazz, folk and music hall –
depression era songs of love, life and death, struggle, desire, economic
hardship and laughter. The archive acts as a resource for new projects and
collaborations. By inviting musicians, DJs and producers to reanimate the
archive by cutting, splicing, covering and remixing the material for a
series of projects, live events and CD or vinyl releases. Each new project
is potentially the first step in a long chain of reworking, sampling and
looping that reaches far beyond the limits of the archive – from an
unplugged version of Leroy Carr’s Six Cold Feet In The Ground flipped by a
female folk singer to a UK hip-hop take on Jimmie Rodger’s 1928 Waiting For
A Train.
For Coleman Project Space, Simpson and White revisit the space’s former life
as a shop and collaborate with designer Ismini Adami to set up a temporary
outlet store - distributing direct to the public The outlet makes available
the material from the archive on CDs, hand printed CDRs, and vinyl which
visitors can browse, listen to and take away. The CDs and records are
available in exchange for a suggested donation and all material is
out-of-copyright or copyleft licensed – free for use and reuse in the
future. Featuring new live recordings of collaborations with Serafina
Steer, Hest, Magic Arm, Sisters of Transistors, studio recordings of work
with Homelife Duo, Liz Green, Sundowner; and 1920s and 30s archive source
recordings by Virginia Liston, Cleo Brown, Honey Hill and more. . .
Eileen Simpson and Ben White’s work was recently selected for Nought to
Sixty, ICA and for British Art Show 6 (Screen Tests in collaboration with
Neil Cummings and Marysia Lewandowska). Recent work has been shown with
Gasworks, London; Vegas Gallery, London; K3, Zurich; Free Studios in Geneva;
