Nella sua seconda mostra personale ad Artopia, Valentina Loi torna a riflettere sulla possibiltà di creare un’opera d’arte utilizzando differenti linguaggi, come la pittura, il video e la fotografia che, a differenza di quanto avveniva nella prima mostra (Painting versus Video, 2003), non vengono visti come antagonisti ma si integrano a vicenda.
Valentina raccoglie le foto dei viaggi compiuti durante gli ultimi quattro anni, dalla sua partenza dall’Italia, e tramite un intervento pittorico “infantile” di cancellatura e disegno, vi lavora direttamente sulla superficie rivivendo, come in un gioco, i luoghi e le esperienze vissute, ri-creando memorie e scoprendo nuovi elementi. Così come la mente cancella o fissa ricordi e impressioni, Valentina omette e aggiunge elementi alle immagini dei suoi viaggi.
Le oltre cinquanta fotografie, nate da questo lavoro, rivestono le pareti della galleria, divenendo l’album fotografico personale di ogni spettatore-viaggiatore, proiettandolo in mondi eterogenei, reali ed immaginari, vissuti e rielaborati allo stesso tempo. La musica malinconica di un carillon fa da sottofondo ai flashback, mentre in un angolo intimo della galleria, il video di una barchetta di carta, dona un senso di continuità a questo viaggio.

For her second solo show, Valentina Loi has returned to explore the notions of creating a body of work using several media such as: painting, video and photography. These mediums are no longer in conflict as they were in her first solo show at Artopia (Painting versus Video) but in harmony creating one body of work.
Valentina Loi has taken images from her travels over the past 4 years since she has left Italy. Working directly on the photographs, she intervenes on the images in a playful manner. Loi re-explores the places she has been to, and like a game, she cancels and recreates with paint the places she visited. Eliminating and adding to the photograph like someone would eliminate and add to ones memory, Loi recreates memories and discovers new elements.
More then fifty photographs are the fruit of these travels; covering the walls of the gallery they become a personal photo-album for each visitor or traveler entering the space. The visitor is projected into real or imaginary world that has been recreated through paint. In the background a faint melancholic noise of a music box plays: unknown if it is real or if it is a recording, it will attract you to the final piece in the gallery: a video of a paper boat that symbolically transports you into the world of travels.
Valentina Loi was born in Milan and has lived in Paris and New York. She has exhibited in major European and American cities. Some of her works are part of permanent collections such as the New Museum in Detroit and the Museum of Bergamo. In 2002 Loi won the Jack Goodman Award for Art and Technology in New York and in 2004 the Prize for Young Italian Painters and Roger Dubuis Foundation Prize of Contemporary Art in Geneva. Loi currently resides in Paris, where she won the Moving-up grant in 2005 for the Dena Foundation residency at the Centre International des Récollets. She then went on to complete another residency at the Cité Universitaire in 2007.
