Oh my GR-DVM5, oh oh, GR-DVM5

In his first solo exhibition at Metro Pictures, T. J. Wilcox presents two of his latest video works and several new photographs. Unlike much of the artist's earlier work, which was presented on 16mm film and involved an elaborate filming, editing, and re-filming process, Midnite Movie (2001) and Ladies Room (20 Questions) (2002) were shot simply on digital video. Deliberate in their immediacy and directness, these works possess a raw documentary or biographical quality.

Ladies Room (20 Questions) features two extravagant characters interviewed by way of twenty separate one-word inquiries. Presented simply with words such as 'London' or '????', each lady is allowed to explore whatever associations or memories are evoked. That each of the interviewees shine with 'star power' adds to their glamorous and lavish responses.

Midnite Movie features participatory screenings of The Rocky Horror Picture Show shot at various venues-- from Providence, Rhode Island to Paris, France- which express a certain home-made gaudiness and tawdry spectacle, "a celebratory ritual," according to the artist, "that takes place in the flickering light of cinematic projection".

T. J. Wilcox was born in Seattle, Washington in 1965. He attended the School of Visual Arts in New York and received his MFA from the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California in 1995. His work has been included in numerous exhibitions including "The American Century- Art & Culture 1900-2000" and the "Whitney Biennial" (1997) both at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, "Greater New York" at PS1 in New York, "Dialogues" at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, and "The Americans- New Art" at the Barbican Art Gallery in London. Mr. Wilcox had a one-person show at the Institute of Contemporary Arts, London in 1998. He lives and works in New York City.
