The Lama, the Jurt, the Oracle
On the road with a Mongolian Lama
Part 1, Diptych Left Side/
Der Lama,die Jurte, das Orakel
Unterwegs mit einem Lama in der Mongolei
Teil 1 Diptychon, Linke Seite
D.Mongolia.1994/95.108 min.
1994 Wolf Kahlen spent two months with the Mongolian Lama Zagdag
on the road, in the jurts or on the backs of yaks and horses.
Either in the lamas' jurt, a stone throw apart of the Gandan
Tegchoeling Monastery at Ulan Baatar, Mongolia's capital,
or at Djenghis Khans Karakorum site, now Erdene Zu Monastery.
Wolf Kahlen, actually on the footsteps of a Tibetan Mahasiddha
called Thang-stong rgyal-po, a
his 'Leonardo of Tibet',
portraits the daily and nightly life:
The obligations of the lama on the trip to the nomads,
giving blessings, hope or oracles.
The film depicts in extraordinary slow moves of the camera the
'arriving' in a country of a different time sensation. And of a
circular time perception of the Tibetan Buddhist Philosophy.

Ich koennte mir mich auch schoener vorstellen, 1975

The moving portrait of Ingeborg Luescher, embracing her recently born
daughter Una,
does not satiesfy her: She could imagine herself more beautiful.
So I stop the image on the screen and ask her to correct herself,
while I just now and then 'play' with the shutter.
In these screen-cosmetics she lifts up a line here, softens another, slims a
shape, sharpens the contours of the lips.
(Just all those changes a computer user twenty years later can do with image
processing programs).
The openings and closings of the shutter awaken associations between
Expresionism
and the misty, sleek softness in the faces of Kakemonos of the Japanese
Heian period.
Media always alienate.
