POPVIEW 2009

The seven nominated submissions for the Lex van Rossen Award 2009: Kalle Björklid (Finland), Julien Bourgeois (Frace), Jordi Huisman (Netherlands), Charlie de Keersmaecker (Belgium), Danny North (UK), Patrick Ryming (Denmark) and Tom Verbruggen (Belgium)

Noorderlicht presents Popview 2009: the nominees for the Lex van Rossen Award 2009. This is the second edition of the annual photo exhibition Popview. This European platform for pop photography gives European music photographers under the age of 35 the chance to bring their work before an international audience, outside of the normal context of music and news magazines, internet and artwork.

A team of photographers and curators has made a selection of seven young, talented music photographers. From their midst a professional jury* chose the winner of the Lex van Rossen Award 2009, who will be named during the Eurosonic Noorderslag festival. The award ceremony takes place Friday, January 16, at 4:30 p.m., in the Small Hall of the Oosterpoort Cultural Centre. (admission free)

MORE INTENSIFIED!

Selections from the Rock Photography of Ken Schles 1993-2006
A selection from the large archive of music photography of Ken Schles. With photographs of musicians such as Alicia Keys and Rod Stewart, but also Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and 16 Horsepower.

Ken Schles (US, b. 1960) shows a selection from his large archive of photos: pictures he shot of diverse musicians such as Alicia Keys and Rod Stewart, but also Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and 16 Horsepower. With his photos he wants to provide the viewer with a deeper understanding, a richer experience, and offer insight into someone whom you will probably never meet and whose music you may or may not know. Presently the recording industry and artists prefer slick images: illustration, theater, fiction. But Schles has striven to do something genuine, even though doing photo portraits always bends the truth. "I have tried to be an honest broker between musicians and the public, and to show real, perhaps even vulnerable individuals. You can look at these photos and think that you are seeing a number of famous rock stars. I don't do that. I see only people, just as tragic and as full of hope as you and I."

Ken Schles and Noorderlicht have seen a lot of each other over the years. Schles has participated in Noorderlicht Photofestivals a number of times. In 2005 he had an exhibition in the Noorderlicht Photogallery with Promised Land.
