Why Look at Animals? showcases of more than 200 photographs from the George Eastman House Collection created from 1852 to the present. The exhibition explores the complex and multi-faceted relationship between humans and animals and the ways wee see them. The relationships between humans and the other animals are complex and profound; the photographs shown reflect this complex symbiosis.

Photographs of animals can serve as recollective illustrations or as objects of science, humor, beauty, or fear. Images of animals can evoke the powerful energy of symbols. It is because animals are like us that we often concentrate on the ways they differ from us; we look at animals to define our humanity. Photographs of animal often reveal more about the people who made them and who look at them than they share about their subjects.

We look at animals because their presence allows us to tell ourselves who we are. They are both like and unlike us, and it is by what we do and do not share that defines us as human. As these photographs show, animals inhabit most spheres of our lives and in many ways, some with the power of mystery, and others with the different but no less meaningful power of the familiar. We look at — and photograph — animals to register and elucidate ourselves.

Why Look at Animals? was organized by George Eastman House International Museum of Photography and Film.
