JAZZ FILM 'SOUNDIES' SCREENING
AND LIVE IMPROVISED SOUNDTRACKS
As part of Derit Art Spaces "Loft Jazz" series film
archivist Tim Caldwell will present a screening of
rare and seldom seen 16mm prints of musical short
subjects on Friday March 15th. These 'soundies' were
originally projected on visual jukeboxes in nightclubs
of the 1940's-50's.
Some of the featured performers in this program are
Duke Ellington, Frank Sinatra, Cab Calloway, Louis
Armstrong, Thomas 'Fats' Waller, Dorothy Dandridge and
the Mills Brothers.
The second half of the evening will be live music from
Hakim Jami and friends.
The following night, Saturday March 16th, will feature
abstract and inventive projections with improvised
soundtracks by Hakim Jami and friends.
$10 donation is suggested.
