FAIR

Royal College of Art Galleries, London

For one week only, FAIR offers London an exciting chance to participate in the activities of some of the world's most dynamic art organisations, who will show the work of more than 70 artists. The exhibition will take the form of an art fair to engage with the dynamic and often paradoxical relationship between art, the market and systems of cultural currency.

The galleries at the Royal College of Art will be divided into separate spaces in which organisations will be invited to convey the spirit of their programmes.

These organisations have been chosen for their deliberate hybridity; emerging from a wide range of social and economic frameworks, each organisation has developed unique strategies for funding and presenting some of the most exciting and challenging new art internationally. Ranging from commercial galleries to young institutions, they each have an independence of vision, a commitment to artists, and a determination to do their own thing. FAIR offers a fluid, interactive environment that will encourage exchange, experimentation and critical reflection on the ways artists and galleries position themselves in the face of globalisation.

The new culture of hypercapitalism has had a crucial influence on the conception of FAIR. Writers like Jeremy Rifkin and B. Joseph Pine have described a new era of capitalism in which the commodification of lived experiences takes precedence over the marketing of material objects. In a world of booming travel and tourism, virtual reality, cyberspace and lifestyle companies, art now faces stiff competition from the 'experience economy' for the communication of cultural values. FAIR seeks to examine the implications of this development for artists and for the agencies which represent them.

London is a major art centre but has no international art fair of its own. By bringing to London live fragments of art scenes from across the globe, FAIR will examine an exciting moment in which art and the market court one another in ever more complex ways. A catalogue and a series of discussions, lectures, screenings and performances will highlight these concerns and encourage reflection on the activities in the exhibition.

Events will include:

Tuesday 19 March, 6pm: panel discussion with artist Swetlana Heger and other panelists to be confirmed

Friday 22 March, 8:00pm: music performance by Düsseldorf and London-based Studio Apartment

'Business to Business', a project by artist Carey Young with London-based galleries that will create a business to business critique of FAIR

Daily talks and screenings by the invited organisations in FAIR
