comunicato stampa

"Whenever the question of the relationship between an image and its representation remains unsolved, (…) something valuable and new is won".
(Georg Baselitz)

This exhibition at the MdM SALZBURG has been organized in close cooperation with the artist and presents an overview on the oeuvre of Georg Baselitz (*1938 as Hans-Georg Kern in Deutschbaselitz in the former German Democratic Republic) from the 1960s until 2008, including a variety of different phases and approaches referred to as "methods" by the artist.

Already in the early 1960s the style created by Baselitz was characterized by unconventional painting techniques and a provocative choice of motifs. In 1961 he published the "1st Pandemonic Manifesto" in collaboration with Eugen Schönebeck; in this work he proclaims for the first time his aversion to harmony and conventions, a recurrent theme in his entire oeuvre. Baselitz’ paintings are always created spontaneously, characterized by a coarse painting technique and unconventional image composition, never showing any regularity and strictly avoiding any form of categorization.

With the development of his oeuvre from "idols" to "new types", from "fracture paintings" to "standing on their head" paintings, from "finger paintings" to "Russian paintings" and finally with the "Remix" Series, Georg Baselitz proves that it is always possible to devise new ways and methods of painting, even though this art genre has often been declared dead.

In this show approx. 65 paintings are juxtaposed with five sculptures showcasing the artist’s sculptural work.
