Wilfrid Moser

Kunstmuseum Bern, Bern

The exhibition presents the development of the work of artist, a pioneer figure in the development of post-war art in Europe and a main representative of the gestural abstract in Switzerland from his early work in the 1930s to his final pastels in 1997. Here the focus is on his artistic innovation, which has received too little attention so far, such as the 'Paysages de Metro' from the 1960s which represent a new type of iconography of the metropolis in twentieth-century painting.

comunicato stampa

Curated by Matthias Frehner, Tina Grutter

Twelve years after the death of Wilfrid Moser (1914 - 1997) his work is being presented in a retrospective thereby emphasizing his contemporary relevance.

The retrospective will be held in collaboration with the Wilfrid Moser Foundation which has collected, categorized and academically presented the estate of the artist from his studios in Paris, Ronco and Zurich.

The exhibition will be presenting the development of the work of Wilfrid Moser, a pioneer figure in the development of post-war art in Europe and a main representative of the gestural abstract in Switzerland from his early work in the 1930s to his final pastels in 1997. Here the focus will be on his artistic innovation, which has received too little attention so far, such as the "Paysages de Métro" from the 1960s which represent a new type of iconography of the metropolis in twentieth-century painting.

From today's point of view, there is also great significance in his figurative realism of the 1980s: Moser's stone landscapes and pictures of undergrowth which are based on photographic paradigms pre-empt trends in contemporary painting. The importance of Moser's coloured synthetic resin sculptures for the sculpture of the twentieth century has so far also found little recognition.
