Conny Dietzschold Gallery is proud to premier the work of Ruark Lewis and Helmut L..hr in Sydney.
Two artists - two languages - two countries - two bodies of works. The artists work with the language of poetry, the printed language - the book. Object and collage, painting, print and photography by artists Ruark Lewis and Helmut L..hr exploring the alchemy of the word, the iconography of text, the labyrinth of the book and the book as poetic object.
In this exhibition you will be seeing and experiencing a dialogue about their concepts and philsophies of art and life. Text Art Dialogue is a visual presentation of their dialogue.

RUARK LEWIS
Ruark Lewis is a visual artist and writer-performer, who works in experimental literature and aud £io arts in new media installations and painting. Lewis's drawing practice is concerned with the process of translation and accordingly the overriding generic title employed
is 'Transcription Drawing'. The intention is to create a transfer from one form to another, that is the poetic form is manifested visually translated. The poetic text is transcribed to convey the essence which becomes transfigured through the new medium. In the process of creating the surface there are varying degrees of distortion and in a final poem-sequence Lewis dissolves the text altogether into the ground of the image.
Lewis's work has been exhibited in Australia, in England at the Richard Salmon Gallery London and the prestigious Ikon Gallery in Birmingham, in Germany at the Sprengel Museum Hannover and in Holland and Spain. A major commission is the permanent installation Relay created for the Sydney Olympic Games 2000.
Publications inclu "de an artist-book project with French writer Natalie Sarraute and the German-English publication based on RAFT supported by the New Media Arts Fund and Goethe Institut. His work is in the collections of the state galleries of New South Wales, Queensland and South Australia, as well as the National Gallery of Australia, National Library of Australia, Bibliotheque Nationale de France, Museum op die Book Den Haag, Chelsea School of Art/London Institute, Kunstbibliothek Berlin, British Library London, Victoria & Albert Museum London (selection). HELMUT LHR
Helmut Lhr has lived and worked all over the world, Dsseldorf, Paris, New York and Santa Fe. Lhr is a conceptual artist working in installations and collages with visual poetry in several languages (German, French, Italian, Japanese, Armenian and English) - they are texts that disrupt the unity of the printed
page by creating what might at first glance seem like abstract typographical babble.
His collages are created from texts which he has cut or ripped into strips and reconfigured into abstractions. They appear to shift and shimmer on the wall or they find form in his books.
Lhr delights in describing a more lengthy and complex collaboration, Visual Music, where musicians Ã’translatedÃ’ the visual text of one of Lhr's telephone book collages into a twenty-two minute performance of piano and soprano saxophone. In an edition of 65 copies the viewer opens a black box to find a cassette of the performance, accompanied by a silkscreened print of the originating collage which can be unfolded to 100x145 cm.

Photography provides Lhr with visual content in yaddition to his visual text, as well as another means for transforming existing material. For example, Lhr's human-sized cibachrome begin with what he calls a 'technical collage', which is created from incised fragments of a found image (usually from magazines), his photographic images and his visual text. Lhr's cutting and reshaping recombine the three sources of language, two visual and one textual, into a shifting pattern. Determining that the works were still incomplete, Lhr photographed the resulting collage and later enlarged the cibachromes to loosen the resolution.
Lhr's works invite us to reconsider language as a larger and more fluid expressive force, activated by the artist's creative chemistry.
His work has been exhibited in Germany, France, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Holland, Hungary, Italy, Ireland, Japan, Switzerland, USA
and is in the collections of the Mus ­eum of Modern Art NY, Brooklyn Museum NY, Stanford University Palo Alto, Frankline Furnace Archive NY, School of the Art Institute Chicago, Museum Haus am Checkpoint Charlie Berlin, Bavarian State Library Munich, Leopold-Hsch-Museum Dren, Kunsthalle Bremen, FU-Library Berlin, Gutenberg Museum Mainz, Victoria & Albert Museum London, FRAC Rouen/France, Feje Megyel Museum Hungary (selection). Helmut Lhr lives and works in Dsseldorf, Germany and Santa Fe, USA.

As a special edition for this exhibition, Ruark Lewis has designed a multiple box comprised of 152 printed cards, 3-colour lithographs and an audio CD of 'False Narratives', stored in a luminous red foldable box. The b ox was produced for Conny Dietzschold Gallery in collaboration with Edition Tremblay & NMA Publication Melbourne, for the exhibitions in Sydney and in Cologne, Germany.

As part of the concept Conny Dietzschold Gallery is also presenting an exhibition of TEXT ART OBJECT with Australian artists Jennifer Joseph (Melb) Ruark Lewis (Sydney) and Richard Tipping (N'castle) from 22 March - 20 April 2002 in Cologne, Germany at Galerien im Kreishaus, Albertusstrasse 26 - T 001149 221 25 47 25.
The concept is to show Australian contemporary art at the Cologne gallery and international contemporary art in Sydney.
