The title of Corinne Mercadier's monographic show is taken from the title of one of her works from the Longue Distance series which seems to perfectly suit its spirit. Mercadier looks at the familiar in a new way, focusing on the transient moment of change of perspective. The distance the artist is after is represented in her search for and sensing of danger, in her noticing of simple, every-day things in an unusual context - as seen from a certain distance. Time and memory, ever-changing as they are, ignoring and transforming recollections by assuming different shapes are the primary themes of Mercadier's work. Yet, the mysterious beauty of her images is more disturbing than harmonious.
In her work, Mercadier uses the Polaroid camera. Her photographs are later transformed, replicated and magnified into subtle yet poignant images. The Polaroid camera is a machine with an attitude, it imposes colour, texture and an artistic vision. The technology obviously adds substance to the themes running through Mercadier's work. Moments, instants, flashes of time is what she is after.
Over 60 images will be exhibited on all 3 floors of Yours Gallery. The work comes from the following series: Longue Distance|Long Distance, Paysages/Landscapes, Ou comence le ciel?/Where does the sky begin?, Une fois et pas plus/Once and only once and Interieurs / Interiors. Among the images on show there will also be a number of original polaroids taken with the original SX-70 camera. Corinne Mercadier will attend exhibition opening night and on the following day she will give a talk and a presentation of her work. The photographer will talk of her inspirations and the technicalities of her work. Mercadier will also demonstrate sculptures she uses in her art which have never been shown to the public before.
