5+1 from a big crash to a new deal

Il periodo che stiamo attraversando è indubbiamente uno tra i più difficili. Il Sistema dell’arte contemporanea come l’abbiamo conosciuto fin ora, con le sue frenetiche speculazioni e i continui giochi al rialzo, ha subito un’improvvisa battuta di arresto. Ma è proprio nei periodi di difficoltà che, in passato, l’arte contemporanea ha reagito offrendo alcuni dei suoi esiti più interessanti. E’ quindi nell’auspicio di un nuovo inizio che si pone questa collettiva, dislocata tra gli spazi della galleria 1000 eVENTI e quelli di ASSAB ONE.

La galleria 1000 eVENTI accoglie cinque giovani artisti, alcuni già noti, altri presentati per la prima volta. Nelle sue fotografie, Thomas Allen ricrea le stesse suggestioni vissute da bambino attraverso i libri pop-up e i View-Master: ritagli di copertine di vecchi romanzi pulp sono liberati dalle loro dimensioni bidimensionali e resi vivi mediante un sapiente uso della messa a fuoco, della luce e della prospettiva. Ogni volume, come il personaggio di un dramma, interagisce con l’altro nella rappresentazione di storie d’amore e desiderio. Da sempre intrappolato nel “sogno americano”, Jay Batlle riflette nei suoi lavori il proprio vissuto di studente, debitore: entrato al college grazie a un “prestito d’onore” che non ha mai potuto ripagare, Jay ha dichiarato fallimento a 24 anni e ha dovuto arrangiarsi lavorando ai margini del sistema. In questa nuova serie di lavori presenta opere il cui soggetto sono i simboli stessi della decadenza americana e della sua personale bancarotta: le sue carte di credito, inchiodate al muro a formare il classico graffito dei carcerati o forate e attraversate da un neon simbolo delle sempre più pericolose linee di credito concesse ai possessori. Melissa Kretschmer propone alcuni lavori che si collocano a metà tra pittura scultura utilizzando materiali “poveri” per esaltarne le qualità intrinseche. La luminosità liquida della cera è amplificata nell’alternanza con gli strati di legno del supporto e nel mescolarsi o sovrapporsi ad altri materiali quali la carta o la grafite, che, oltre a spezzare l’ omogenea superficie dominata dal giallo, conferisce una concretezza inedita alle opere.

Manipolazione delle più diffuse forme di comunicazione e limitazione della loro funzione commerciale sono la chiave di lettura delle opere presentate di Christopher Michlig, artista multimediale che presenta qui alcuni suoi collages realizzati con cartelli pubblicitari. Ancora collages, questa volta realizzati con carte colorate o perspex, ostinatamente scolpiti o tagliati al laser per ottenerne immagini a tre dimensioni, mescolano eccezionale maestria e immaginario trash pop nell’opera di Will Turner. Dietro colori vivaci che parlano il linguaggio di produzione di massa, una minuziosa cura rende il familiare inaspettato, rivelando la bellezza anche nel più improbabile dei soggetti.

ASSAB-ONE ospita la nuova installazione di Andrea Mastrovito, che fa rifiorire gli spazi dell’ex GEA utilizzando come materia prima gli stessi oggetti prodotti dai vecchi macchinari della “fabbrica di libri”. Centinaia di volumi di botanica e giardinaggio, ritagliati e disposti l’uno accanto all’altro sul pavimento, danno vita a grandi e leggere aiuole cartacee in un chiaro rimando al ciclo della vita e della creazione: nulla si crea, nulla si distrugge.

The period we are going through is undoubtedly one of the most difficult in recent history. The contemporary art system as we know it, with its frenetic speculation and continuous upward thrust has suddenly ground to a halt. But hard times are precisely those in which, in the past, contemporary art has reacted, producing some of its most interesting results. So it is in the hope of a new beginning that we present this group show, split between the spaces of Galleria 1000 eVENTI and ASSAB ONE.

Galleria 1000 eVENTI welcomes five young artists, some already well-known, others being shown for the first time. In his photographs Thomas Allen re-creates the atmospheres experienced as a child in pop-up books and View-Masters: cuttings from the covers of old pulp novels are freed of their two-dimensional bonds and come alive through skillful use of focusing, lighting and perspective. Each book, like a character in a play, interacts with the others to act out stories of love and desire. Always enthralled by the “American dream”, Jay Batlle reflects in his works on his experience as an indebted student: having entered college thanks to an “honor loan” he was unable to repay, Jay declared bankruptcy at the age of 24, and then had to make ends meet by working at the edges of the system. In this new series of works, the subjects are the symbols of American decadence and his personal bankruptcy: his credit cards, nailed to the wall to form the classic prison graffito, or perforated and crossed by a neon symbol of the increasingly dangerous lines of credit granted to their possessors.

Melissa Kretschmer proposes several works halfway between painting and sculpture, utilizing “humble” materials to bring out their intrinsic qualities. The liquid luminosity of wax is amplified in the alternation with the layers of wood of the support and in the mixing with or layering over of other materials like paper or graphite, which besides breaking up the uniformity of the yellow dominant of the surface, add an unusual concrete quality to the works. Manipulation of the most widespread forms of communication and limitation of their commercial function are part of the key to the interpretation of the works shown by Christopher Michlig, a multimedia artist, who presents some of his collages made with advertising posters. More collages, this time made with colored paper and card. Multiple layers are patiently cut by hand with a scalpel blade to obtain a three-dimensional image. Mixing exceptional skill with trash pop imagery, the work of Will Turner presents us with vivid colors that speak the language of mass production. Painstaking care renders the familiar unexpected, revealing beauty even in the most improbable subjects.

ASSAB ONE hosts the new installation by Andrea Mastrovito, who brings the spaces of the former GEA printing plant back into bloom by utilizing, as raw material, the very products once made by the old machinery still present in this “book factory”. Hundreds of volumes on botany and gardening, cut out and arranged side by side on the floor, create big, light paper flower beds in a clear reference to the cycle of life and creation: nothing is created, nothing is destroyed.
