comunicato stampa

The 14th edition of the LISTE- The Young Art Fair in Basel will take place from June 9 – 14, 2009. This
year, 64 galleries from 24 countries were selected by our expert jury from a pool of almost 400
applicants. They will be showing the most recent works by 160 young artists from 40 countries. Especially noteworthy this year is the number of solo shows, accounting for one-third of the presentations. The LISTE invites you to get to know new, less well-known but highly promising positions. More than half of this year’s artists will be making their Basel debut. The legendary Kunsthalle Bern, this year’s special guest, will be presenting a number of exciting artist projects, among others, a curated bookshop as well as an intervention by Bradley Pitts. Also, plug.in Basel and Kaskadenkonsator Basel will enrich the fair as special guests. With its daily changing show, the Performance Project promises an exciting glimpse into the contemporary international performance scene. Participating artists are, among others, David Sherry (IE) and Alexandra Bachzetsis (CH). New this year will be public conversations with artists after their performances. These conversations will be lead by Initiative CollectingLiveArt, London.

The LISTE 09 will start with the preview for invited guests and the media viewing on Monday, June 8, 2009, at 1:00 p.m. Immediately following at 5:00 p.m. is the opening reception, which is open to the public and promises to be a huge draw as well as a lavish celebration. At 10:00 p.m., the opening reception party will feature DJ-Sounds and a performance in the NT-Areal, Basel.
As a trend-setting discoverer fair for young contemporary art, each year the LISTE presents new positions from the young international art scene to around 14,000 art lovers, among whom are collectors, gallerists, curators, art dealers and journalists from the world over. More than half of this year’s artists will be making their Basel debut. As an important international art fair for young positions, the LISTE puts great emphasis on new discoveries and thus makes an important contribution to the promotion of young art and young galleries in the international art market. The fair’s reasonable costs and conditions make it possible for many young galleries to take that very important step onto the international art stage. Our policy of selecting young galleries with trend-setting positions by artists under 40 as well as of limiting participation to only a few years gives the LISTE its unique significance and dynamic. At the same time, this concept forms a bridge to Art Basel, and thus LISTE serves many galleries as a springboard to the world’s most important art fair. Almost two-thirds of this year’s Statement-galleries have already participated in the LISTE, and a good one-third of all of the galleries at Art Basel that are showing young contemporary art started out at LISTE. Gallerists and artists know that the much sought-after spots at the LISTE draw the attention of very important museum people and collectors, that artists at LISTE are invited to institutional exhibits, and that many of their works will find a permanent home in excellent institutional or private collections.
The galleries of the LISTE (for a complete listing, please see end of letter)
64 galleries of the younger generation from 24 countries were selected by an international jury of experts. Of the 64 galleries, ten are from Germany, eight come from the USA, seven hail from Great Britain, and five from France. There are four galleries each from Holland and Switzerland. Austria, Italy and Greece are each represented by three galleries. Greece, Japan, and Romania have two galleries each, and there will be one gallery each from Belgium, Brazil, the Czech Republik, Denmark, Hungary, Lithuania, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Spain, Sweden, and Turkey.
17 galleries from 12 countries will be presenting for the first time at the LISTE (indicated by an asterisk in the gallery list). Among them are Croy Nielsen, Berlin, James Fuentes, New York, Kisterem, Budapest, Andreiana Mihail, Bucarest, and Office Baroque, Antwerp.
15 galleries will be returning after participating in Statements at Art Basel. In this way, those important positions will still be represented in Basel. Among the galleries in this category are Diana Stigter, Amsterdam, Carl Freedman, London, Harris Lieberman, New York and NoguerasBlanchard, Barcelona.
22 of the 64 galleries will be presenting a solo show this year. The solo shows along with the gallery presentations focusing on 2-3 artists promise nuanced look into the work of contemporary artists.

LISTE Performance Project
In its fifth year, the LISTE‘s Performance Project, curated by Silke Bitzer, will be presenting nine young artists from seven countries. The performance program, which changes on a daily basis, will be showing a cross-section of the international young performance scene and provides an international platform to this art form which has been recently playing a significant role. Among others, Alexandra Bachzetsis (CH) will present two works on the stage at the Kaserne, Basel, and Wilfredo Prieto (CU) will give a live performance for the first time. Other performance artists are: Fabian Chiquet (CH) & Aaron Sandnes (US), William Hunt (GB), Joanna Zielinska (PL), Feral aka Caron Geary (GB), David Sherry, (IE) and Hanna Hildebrand (CH/IT). A detailed program can be found at: www.liste.ch/exhibitors/specials.shtm

CollectingLiveArt Conversations
This year, CollectingLiveArt, London, will lead a public conversation with the artists from the Performance Project in the tower room immediately after the daily performances. In addition, interviews with artists, experts, and collectors will be conducted regarding the theme of collecting performance art. The interviews will be held on the grounds of the LISTE during the entire week.
The collected interviews will be published following the fair at: www.collectingliveart.com

LISTE Special Guests
"You don't have to understand everything we do to profit from it!" That is the title of this year’s special guest, the Kunsthalle Bern, which will present a curated bookshop, a newspaper, an intervention by Bradley Pitts, and projects by other artists. Kaskadenkondensator, space for contemporary art and performance, Basel, will show anonymous drawings and will present Editionen und Zines. On Sunday, it will present a performance with, among others, Gisela Hochuli, Markus Goessi, and Barbara Sturm. This year, plug.in, art and new media, Basel, will show a video work by
Yan Duyvendak (NL).

For the fifth time, the Nationale Suisse Insurance Company will award its highly coveted art prize. This award is open to graduates of Swiss art colleges who have majored in the field of “visual art and media art.” The prize, which includes a monetary award of 15,000CHF and a solo appearance at the LISTE, goes to Florian Germann, Zurich University of the Arts.
