Somewhere Near The Black Mountain Hills. Both artist share a specific understanding of the underlying aesthetics of Conceptual Art. The work displays a common interest in linking the personal and anecdotal to a wider art historical context. They employ a light-hearted and humorous approach, incorporating the everyday and ephemeral subject matter into their work.
Celebrating its first-year anniversary, Tanya Leighton Gallery is pleased to
present Somewhere Near The Black Mountain Hills, an exhibition by Sean
Edwards and Dan Rees - two artists at the forefront of a new generation of
British artists. Both Edwards and Rees share a specific understanding of the
underlying aesthetics of Conceptual Art. The work displays a common interest
in linking the personal and anecdotal to a wider art historical context. The
artists employ a light-hearted and humorous approach, incorporating the
everyday and ephemeral subject matter into their work.
Please note that Dan Rees' Mid Afternoons and Early Evenings, a performance
in the basement of the gallery, will take place for the opening on Friday,
July 3rd, 6 - 9 pm, and every Saturday, 12 - 6 pm, for the duration of the
show. With special thanks to all the artists and DJs participating in this

Sean Edwards (b. 1980 Cardiff, U.K.), lives and works in Abergavenny, Wales.
He graduated from the MA programme at the Slade School of Art, London, in
2005, where he was awarded the presidigous Slade Project Award. In 2007 he
won the Elephant Trust Grant. His most recent and forthcoming solo
exhibitions include Frank Elbaz, Paris (2010); Nebraska (CBS 25100),
Limoncello, London (2009); Turning it around, slowly, in the light (part of
Nought to Sixty), ICA, London (2009); It's not what we wanted but we'll
settle, Moot, Nottingham (2009); ...Picture Books of the Pyramids and Her
Postcards of Billy the Kid..., Associates, London (2007). Edwards has been
featured in numerous international group exhibitions including at A
Foundation, London; Approach E1; Bloomberg Space, London; Phillips de Pury,
New York; Tanya Bonakdar, New York, and Venice Biennale (2007).
Dan Rees (b. 1982 Swansea, U.K.), lives and works in Berlin. Recent solo
exhibitions include: Art Statements, Basel; If it looks like it and feels
like it, Galerie Andreas Huber, Vienna; Holiday Work, Tradeston/Collective
Gallery, Glasgow/Edinburgh (2008); MOT International (with Alan Brooks),
London (2008); Something to Fill That Empty Feeling, Galeria T293, Naples
(2007); Things I Did When I Was A Young Man, Mission Gallery, Swansea
(2007). His many international group exhibitions include: Richard Prince
and the Revolution, ProjecteSD, Barcelona (curated by Jonathan Monk);
Without (curated by Adam Carr), Galerie Yvon Lambert, Paris (2007); The
Moment You Realise You Are Lost, Galerie Johan Koenig, Berlin (2007); Some
