the audio lounge "sweet dreams are made of this..." deals with modes of identification and self-invention initiated and influenced by contemporary pop music.
the lounge comprises several disparate elements that together form an accessible and interactive audiovisual installation. at the core of the installation is
personal abstracts, a sound and image archive begun in 2001 as a studio lounge in berlin. originally, personal abstracts took the form of a series of events
in which rohlf and maverick invited guests to present aspects of their own music collections to the public through biographical and anecdotal perspectives.
from these interactions emerged a collection of private music archives paired together with personal experiences and confrontations with individual
(musical) histories. the accompanying documentation (including photographic portraits, recorded interviews, and cds containing the specific songs) speaks
to the identity-endowing and formative influence of music. pop, as a referential system, creates a common vocabulary and at the same time enables
continuous differentiation within a heterogeneous medium of self-invention.
the installation's specially designed furniture modules can be used independently by visitors. the personal abstracts module, for example, invites visitors to
listen to the cd documentation via headphones and to follow detailed visual information on a small monitor. the genre generator module, using a simple
gambling machine, enables the visitor to choose from among more than 500 musical genre terms and create new categories by pressing buttons.
a
databank module connected to a printer module allows statistical inquiries about favorite songs by means of certain keywords. moreover, an audio module
is supplied with all the necessary technical equipment to create further recordings, thereby permitting the expansion of the growing archival collection. the
supply module (with fridge and water boiler) together with the variably arranged seating modules provide a suitable ambiance for a comfortable stay in the
lounge.
