Jurgen Mayer H.

mullerdechiara, Berlin

Rotversteck' is Mayer H's largest work to date which deals with data protection patterns (DPP). For many years he has been investigating the mechanisms of our information society, specifically the transmission of data. His work in mullerdechiara carrys over and enlarges a familiar procedure of data protection known from school textbooks onto an architectural scale.

Rotversteck

Rotversteck' (Hideout in Red) is Jürgen Mayer H's first solo show in the gallery müllerdechiara. He also participated, however, in the gallery's group show Wattage and Friendship.' He taught architecture at Harvard University (Cambridge/USA) and at the University of the Arts, Berlin. Mayer H's artwork has been exhibited worldwide, i.e., New York, Berlin, Chicago, Linz, and the ZKM Karlsruhe.

Rotversteck' is Mayer H's largest work to date which deals with data protection patterns (DPP). For many years he has been investigating the mechanisms of our information society, specifically the transmission of data. The DPP is a maelstrom of numbers, patterns and letters, an overload of information that obscures the information which lies beneath.

His work in müllerdechiara carrys over and enlarges a familiar procedure of data protection known from school textbooks onto an architectural scale namely where the solution lies hidden' underneath a red pattern. But here one finds a reversal: the red film, mounted on the plate glass windows, allows for an uninhibited view of the solution' ROTVERSTECK while from the inside one can recognise only the red obscured DPP pattern. In the view to the outside, the Volksbühne, Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz, and the PDS (Partei des Demokratischen Sozialismus) Central Building are tinted red.

Visual transparency plays a central role in modern architecture and society. That the transparency is more often rhetoric, behind which lies the actual, is that trick which Mayer H. brings to our attention.
