Den Frie Centre of Contemporary Art, Copenhagen

By questioning forms of public communication and circulation of artistic ideas Den Frie Centre of Contemporary Art requests the audience actively to participate in distribution of Art.

The market-related growth and commercial development, which has dominated the Art World within the recent years is on the decline. The arts field finds itself in a time of unrest and upheaval which open up for new possibilities and challenges. Based on this premise Den Frie Centre of Contemporary Art, with the exhibition FRI PORTO, intends to contribute to the debate about alternative public communication forms and re-establish an open and dialogue based public communication form.

Sixty Danish and international artists are invited to participate in the exhibition with contributions that either can be copied on a photocopy machine, send by e-mail or in other ways distributed by the visitors. Besides the concept of distribution, the artists have no directions concerning either content or form of their artworks. Thereby the participating artists have free hands to conceive their contribution. Several of the contributions in the exhibition appear as sketches or instructions, and some works can rather be seen as 'visual material' in the borderland of various artistic practises.

As visiting exhibition guest it is possible, with the help of instructions by the artists, to e.g. construct, colour, stick onto, mail or copy, and thereby mark the works one chose to forward to friends, colleagues or acquaintances.

The exhibition is inspired by the 1960ies Mail Art correspondence tradition which, among other things, worked with alternative public communication forms, where the art ideally were supposed to break free from the art institution. Besides the experimental character of the exhibition, we hope that it will leave the visitor with reflections about the materiality of the artwork, originality, relation to the institutional contexts and what it entails that the public is co-creator of an artwork.

FRI PORTO is supposed to be seen as a contemporary response to the legendary exhibition Working Drawings and Other Visible Things on Paper Not Necessarily Meant to Be Viewed as Art from 1966, arranged by the American artist Mel Bochner and often referred to as the first example of conceptual Art. The exhibition consisted of four ring binders, containing various materials, which the artist had received from a range of colleagues and subsequently photocopied.

Den Frie Centre of Contemporary Art is a house for artists. The purpose of the house is to create exhibitions which are selected and produced by artists, and thereby differ from other contemporary art exhibitions. Due to the democratic and artist run structure, Den Frie Centre of Contemporary Art is supposed to function as an experimental exhibition forum. The purpose of the democratic decision making process is to ensure an artistic, multifarious and qualitative, forward thinking exhibition profile.
The profile of Den Frie Centre of Contemporary Art is in the field of tension between tradition and innovation. It means that the house is both supposed to be open to the traditional artists’ unions and to display unconventional art experiments. In terms of all practising artists, the task of Den Frie Centre of Contemporary Art is to constitute a forum for artistic divergence. At the same time Den Frie Centre of Contemporary Art has the task of identifying contemporary art practises which have not necessarily reached the attention of the general public, the museums or the more commercial art scene.
