'Hauntology of Smoke and Ochre', is the first large-scale, solo exhibition by Paul Hendrikse in the Netherlands, commences from the life and work of South African writer Ingrid Jonker. The space between Jonker and the historical perception of her life plays a central role - Hendrikse enlarges this space to deal with the concept of persona development. 'Vocabulary Lesson' is a new project by Amsterdam-based artists collective CORO. Concepts such as the performative power of role-play and learning to 'be somebody' are conveyed in the video work with a light, antic touch, with hints of ambiguous symbolism and references to unknown rituals. Ekstatic Auditoria / The Night Church presents performances that communicate the breadth and depth of human endeavours to commune with the divine.
Paul Hendrikse - Hauntology of Smoke and Ochre
Hauntology of Smoke and Ochre, the first large-scale, solo exhibition by Paul Hendrikse in the Netherlands, commences from the life and work of South African writer Ingrid Jonker. The space between Jonker and the historical perception of her life plays a central role – Hendrikse enlarges this space to deal with the concept of persona development.
For Hauntology of Smoke and Ochre Hendrikse developed an entirely new body of work, including a series of posters in collaboration with graphic designer Sarah Infanger, a video work in collaboration with actresses Nicola Hanekom and Grethe Fox, text-based works and a slide-installation that was developed with the photographers David Southwood and Melanie Hofmann.
Throughout the project the complex and intriguing life and work of South African writer and poet Ingrid Jonker (1933-1965) plays an essential role. Jonker became politically engaged in the fifties when she vehemently opposed a law imposing censorship on publications and entertainment. Her work was published in Drum, a clandestine ‘black’ magazine, and in 1963 she won South Africa’s most prestigious literature prize with Rook en Oker (Smoke and Ochre). After her suicide in 1965 Jonker’s work got forgotten, but after the fall of the Apartheids-regime Jonker became a public figure of mythical proportions, functioning as a character in film, theatre and publications.
However, Hendrikse doesn’t intent to analyze or deconstruct these dynamics and histories; rather, he examines the transitional point from the ‘real’ thing to its perception. The majority of the works in the exhibition show a direct relation with the figure of the (fictionalized) Ingrid Jonker, interwoven with the idea of doubling – the creation of personas and questions surrounding the credibility and withholding of information. The broader context relates to processes of appropriation and manipulation of histories by media, people and politics.
Hauntology of Smoke and Ochre also includes a performance and a publication, both to be presented toward the end of the exhibition.
During the exhibition opening artist, writer and poet Maria Barnas, one of the contributors to Hendrikse’s publication, will read her own and Ingrid Jonker’s poetry.
Paul Hendrikse was born in 1977 in the Netherlands and lives and works in Berlin. In 2005/2006 he was researcher at Fine Arts, Jan van Eyck Academy, Maastricht, the Netherlands. The works exhibited were partly developed during a residency at Wiels, Brussels.

Vocabulary Lesson CORO (Egle Budvytyte, Goda Budvytyte & Ieva Miseviciute)
Vocabulary Lesson is a new project by Amsterdam-based artists collective CORO (Egle Budvytyte, Goda Budvytyte & Ieva Miseviciute). Concepts such as the performative power of role-play and learning to ‘be somebody’ are conveyed in the video work with a light, antic touch, with hints of ambiguous symbolism and references to unknown rituals. Interplaying between a minimalist language of geometric forms, limited colour palette and angular movements performed in the spirit of the absurd or extravagant; its aesthetics play on certain elements of early Avant-garde movements such as DADA and Constructivism, as well as more modern Vogue dance mannerisms.

Ekstatic Auditoria / The Night Church, is the kick-off for a new monthly performance programme in 2010. The Night Church presents performances that communicate the breadth and depth of human endeavours to commune with ‘the divine’: to act in the face of
