To celebrate Queen Elizabeth II's Golden Jubilee, Liz Neal presents AUSGANG!
an exhibition and party in honor of HM Queen Elizabeth II and all things
royal and British..
The Golden Jubilee celebrates 50 years of the reign of Elizabeth II. It is
also a time to examine how ideas of national identity and nationhood have
changed in the UK in the past 50 years. What does it mean to be a subject of
the Queen in 2002? The Jubilee was last celebrated in 1977, the year of
punk, strikes and terrorists. How much Britain has, or has not, changed
since 1977, and who is now included in Britishness are the main focuses of
this celebratory exhibition.
AUSGANG! brings together a group of artists and friends for whom the Jubilee
has many different resonances including: Shez Dawood, a young artist based
in London whose advertising inspired paintings, posters and objects take as
a starting point his own position as a young person of Pakistani origin who
has grown up in the UK. Dawood has exhibited as part of Century City at the
Tate Modern and 000zerozerozero at the Whitechapel Art gallery, 1999. Holly
Johnson is renown as the lead singer of the band Frankie Goes to Hollywood
and has exhibited his art works, paintings, videos and installations since
1994. Johnson also wrote his highly acclaimed autobiography A Bone in my
Flute. Liz Neal's work was last seen in London in Death to the Fascist
Insect, curated by Martin Maloney for Anthony d¹Offay in 2001. Neal's
sexually explosive canvases are punk inspired odes to subjects normally
outside of mainstream art discourse. Prostitutes advertising cards and
banner slogans shout for attention in paintings that are smart, intelligent
and slowly compelling.
