International Performance Festival Space Invaders Platform. A Performance by Elena Nemkova. The performance "Orbital Sculpture" proposes that a sculpture be placed in the Earth's orbit by a Russian space shuttle. Currently ''Orbital Sculpture'' is still at the proposal stage. The project aims to start a new era in art, which will explore and use new sites. Moreover it seeks to challenge artists to engage with alien environments.
ORBITAL SCULPTURE
A Performance by Elena Nemkova
''Earth is the cradle of reason and the intellect but it is impossible to live in this cradle for ever.''
K. Tsiolkovsky
This performance proposes that a sculpture be placed in the Earth's orbit by a Russian space shuttle.
Currently ''Orbital Sculpture'' is still at the proposal stage. The project aims to start a new era in art, which will explore and use new sites. Moreover it seeks to challenge artists to engage with alien environments.
Satellites and space stations orbiting around the Earth show the level of technological sophistication we have reached but they do not represent or define much of our contemporary culture on Earth.
Once the orbital sculpture is positioned it can be observed through small-scale telescopes from Earth. The sculpture can also be connected to art museums and galleries via the Internet.
Current and future space tourists, following in the path set by space's first tourist Denis Tito, will be shown the ''Orbital Sculpture'' during their trips in space.
During the performance at the Warwick arts centre the project ''Orbital Sculpture will be presented to and assessed by an audience.
As part of my presentation people will be invited to express their opinion about this project. Their responses will be collected and used to help define the look of the future sculpture. People of all ages will then be invited to draw some sketches and cast their vote.
The live performance is structured in the following way.
