This is a collaboration between an independent space in London, ecArtspace, and two Berlin Galleries. This exchange features work rooted in the gestural abstract tradition of painting and drawing. The artists are of the same generation, Berlin based Christoph M. Gais and Frank M. Zeidler, and London based Frances A. Blane.

BERLIN - LONDON GALLERY SWAP
The British Council Berlin and the Goethe Institut London have joined forces
in
a unique collaboration to bring together some of the most innovative young
galleries from Europe's two leading art capitals. During the summer of 2002,
galleries from Berlins Mitte district - which is located in the former East
Berlin
and currently the site of intense artistic vibrancy - temporarily re-locate
to
London where they have teamed up with host venues and will introduce the
London audience to a wide spectrum of contemporary visual arts practice from
Berlin.
A reciprocal exchange from London to Berlin will follow in the autumn.
The Berlin - London Gallery Swap has been co-ordinated by Mark Gisbourne,
in London.
Details about the exchange can be found on the web site:

This is a collaboration between an independent space in London, ecArtspace,
and two Berlin Galleries, who share the same space in Mitte, Galerie Inga
Kondeyne and Galerie Seitz & Partner. This exchange features work rooted in
the gestural abstract tradition of painting and drawing. The artists are of
the
same generation, Berlin based Christoph M. Gais and Frank M. Zeidler, and
London based Frances A. Blane.
The paintings of Christoph M. Gais are shaped by ornamental, clear
structures in few contrasting colours: from the grid-like repetition of
modular
elements a shimmering pictorial surface of intriguing complexity is built up.
Gaiss work will be complemented by those of Frank M. Zeidler who has
developed an increasing sense of sumptuous colour in his large scale
paintings and drawings during the last 30 years.
London based artist Frances A. Blane will counterpoint these Berlin based
expressions with her own highly structured paintings and drawings. The work
moves beyond the personal and is reliant upon the paint and charcoal finding
its own form. These seemingly simple paintings have an energy and power in
keeping with the work for which Blane has become known.
The London exhibition will take place in an out of gallery space in June
2002;
the Berlin exhibition will take place in the Mitte gallery in October 2002.
