Katharina Gaenssler. Retrospective

27. January 2010 – 02. May 2010

The Sprengel Museum Hannover will present a retrospective of Katharina Gaenssler's oeuvre in the museum's Photographic Gallery. The exhibition consists of twenty-two books which represent the work of this Munich-based artist. There are 85 volumes, all bound by hand, and each in a limited edition.

Katharina Gaenssler considers individual images to be details of visual flow. This manifests itself in movement through space, whether the space in question is her studio, or a library, a prison cell, a city, an entire country or as intimate as, for example, between herself and her grandmother. The artist deconstructs these spaces using her camera, by patiently taking countless single images, which are then 'recorded' in book form. She also realises temporary installations which reconstruct the spaces involved. Every aspect of the entire space is given equal priority; she doesn't select or sort out parts of the result. The subjective nature of taking photographs provides the impulse for what then leads to the mechanical act of taking the picture involved. The camera functions as a means of protection, something for the photographer to hide behind, while also being an instrument that makes it possible for Katharina Gaenssler to 'own' what she sees, and make it part of her artistic process.

To mark this exhibition, there will be a MERZBAUBUCH available at the Sprengel Museum Hannover.

Made possible with the kind support of the Hypo-Kulturstiftung, Munich.

Alexander Rodschenko. Two Editions

27. January 2010 – 11. April 2010

Both editions presented here pay tribute to the essence of the artist's work during the turbulent yet productive era of the early Soviet Union – a time of heated debates on artistic and societal issues. Alexander Rodschenko's (1891–1956) photographs played a crucial role in this process. He found himself at the “Epicentre of Modernity”, Moscow, where in the avant-garde the meaning of Transnational was as feverishly discussed as was the role of the artist in society and how facts are visually expressed.

This exhibition offers us now the chance to consider the questions which motivated debates at that time from a contemporary perspective.
