Poetry in Double-time

comunicato stampa

Exhibition presented by Wiels in the context of the festival Poetry in Double-time in Bruges which explores poetical language, poetical process and poetical practice in today's visual arts.

Artists: Robert Devriendt, Anne-Mie Van Kerckhoven, Walter Swennen, Koo Jeong-A, Lothar Hempel, Henri Jacobs, Gabriel Kuri, Willem Oorebeek

'A rustling revolution' (Lucebert), the first edition of Poetry in Double-time in Brugges, takes Belgian poet Guido Gezelle's work as its starting point. 'A rustling revolution' explores the influence which one poet (or one artist) can have on another. It also raises the question of whether one form of artistic expression enhances or deforms another.

In the visual arts exhibition entitled Idiolect, Dirk Snauwaert, curator of the visual arts section of Poetry in Double-time, explores what contemporary poetics can mean in today's world. This exploration is based on the term "creolisation", a linguistic phenomenon which most frequently occurs in regions such as the Caribbean, the Antilles, Surinam, etc. It is a process whereby various languages and cultural elements intermingle with each other.

The exhibited artists have drawn their inspiration from Edouard Glissant, a philosopher-poet who was born in Martinique who in his Introduction à une poétique du divers defined "creolisation" as "ce qui change en échangeant". The artists were given the opportunity to express their own poetics in the streets and buildings of Brugges. The resulting exhibition presents what can be defined as poetical language, poetical process and poetical practice in today's visual arts.

Curator: Dirk Snauwaert / Realisation: Kwinten Lavigne
The Poetry selection is curated by Gwij Mandelinck, with the help of Dirk Roofthooft and Koen van Synghel in the context of Poetry in Double Time, a co-production of the Musea Brugge and Brugge Plus vzw with the collaboration of the Public Library
