The Hood Gallery is proud to present new work by Los Angeles based artist
Tom Texas Holmes. The work has been specially produced for The Hood Gallery
and in keeping with the artist's previous work merges minimalist traditions with
appropriations of corporate design.
The basic design of the colour fields that cover the car come from a pizza menu
of the sort that litter your post box on a weekly basis. It comes complete
with
prices, which have obviously been tampered with to heighten their role as
abstract components in this performative sculpture piece rifing on the history
of design, custom car culture, pop and photo collage.
The pizza abstractions are coupled with a Russian text written in bright red,
reflective letters. The text clearly emulates the lo-tech, home-made-ness of
Bolshevik signage used all over the eastern block during the cold war.
Holmes use of a large photographic and self-adhesive image of a donkeys
behind would surely be deemed as utterly decadent by the very same
Bolsheviks, but it is in the juxtaposition between these elements and the
flirtation with the tasteless that the work gains its meaning. Avoiding the
pitfalls of turning the gallery into Nascar Tom Texas Holmes balances
on the verge of the acceptable, but comes out victorious in show that is
both aesthetically engaged and daringly provocative.
