The Cattle Raid, whose title is taken from an Irish epic creation myth, is an installation about the questions of creation, existance, and form. But where the original epic poem is about the creation of society marked by a specific beginning, we might consider O'Shea's latter-day version to be an anti-creation myth.
müllerdechiara berlin is pleased to announce Mick OSheas opening of The Cattle Raid
running from June 12th until July 9th, with a reception for the artist on Tuesday, June 18th, at 7pm.
The Cattle Raid, whose title is taken from an Irish epic creation myth, is an installation
about the questions of creation, existance, and form. But where the original epic poem is
about the creation of society marked by a specific beginning, we might consider OSheas
latter-day version to be an anti-creation myth. More specifically, the work describes an
invasion of popular and domestic culture into a suburban landscape, clearly referencing
globalisation and consumerism.
He portrays this landscape, demarcated by small plastic tanks, flower boxes, and plastic
swans. The landscape have been fully taken over and changed by the incursion of popular
culture. The invasion doesnt end here. There is a cheap and tawdry side to all of this
too: Neon arrows, tiny houses, plastic flowers, and colourful promotional balloons are the
stock of dime stores and suburbia. OShea buys, paints, reuses, and finally transforms
these objectssimilar in process to the way they have changed our landscape. Mick
OSheas work is a visual sociology, masquerading as a childs toy.
This is OSheas first solo show in Berlin. He participated in the group show Wattage and
Friendship at müllerdechiaras former space on Alte Jakob Straße with the installation
American Palisades. Based in Manhattan, OShea has previously shown (in both solo
and group shows) in New York at PS1, PS122, Roebling Hall, Bellwether, Wave Hill, and
the Bronx Museum for the Arts; and at the Kunst-Werke (Berlin), Villa Medici (Rome),
Arnolfini (Bristol), Gallery 312 (Chicago), Ciocca Arte Contemporenaea in Milan, the Contemporary
Art Center in Cincinnati, and at Wesleyan University. Upcoming shows include
Rhona Hoffman Gallery in Chicago and at the De Chiara Gallery in Chelsea, NY.
