BAFTA In The Midlands
Lawless Heart Screening

Optimum Releasing (15)
Dir/Scr: Neil Hunter and Tom Hunsinger
With: Bill Nighy/Douglas Henshall/Tom Hollander/Clémentine Célarié

We will open this evening in Birmingham with a screening of the BAFTA Winning Short Film About A Girl introduced by the producer Janey de Nordwall.

Lawless Heart marks the second film from writer/directors NEIL HUNTER and TOM HUNSINGER. A modern love story, where lust, loyalty and courage are put to the test, Lawless Heart is described by co-writer/director Hunsinger as "a human comedy about love".

The film is set in Maldon, an English seaside town and follows three men: Dan (BILL NIGHY), Nick (TOM HOLLANDER) and Tim (DOUGLAS HENSHALL), who begin to look at life differently following the death of their mutual friend Stuart, and find themselves daring to take new paths in life and love. Presented as three separate stories, the events and characters are intertwined, glancing off each other, with each man's story offering a different perspective on the lives of the other characters.

This event has been organized by BAFTA Member Roger Shannon, who is one of the Executive Producers of Lawless Heart. We hope it will be the first of many BAFTA events in the Midlands.

Focus on Zentropa

Patrolling the Margins 4

As part of the "Patrolling the Margins" strand of events focussing on digital filmmaking the New Producers Alliance and BAFTA are proud to present a full day at BAFTA with the creative and executive brains behind one of the worlds most innovative film production companies: ZENTROPA on the occasion of the studio's 10th anniversary year.

Since it's foundation in 1992, Zentropa has become one of the pre-eminent production houses in Europe and the shining star of Danish film-making. Built on what co-founder Peter Aalbaek Jensen (with Lars Von Trier) calls "director-driven films", Zentropa has had much success recently with such works as Lars Von Triers multi award-winning Breaking the Waves, Dancer in the Dark, Italian for Beginners and now the Berlin Winner Minor Mishaps.

As a host to the foundation of the influential "Dogme95' movement with such hits as Mifune, Festen, The Idiots and 'The King is Alive' Zentropa helped to widen the appeal and similarly release the potential of digital-based low-budget filmmaking, spurring thousands of filmmakers around the world. The so called "Vow of Chastity" which the founding members undertook, encouraged filmmakers to make more direct films with pared down storytelling methods and a greater concentration on character studies. Peter Aalbaek Jensen has referred to this as coming to the aid of directors who have "lost their erection". Martin Scorsese called Von Trier "a wonderful filmmaker. He got furious, threw everything up in the air and said "look lets start from nowhere now"'.

Now returning to the approach of director led filmmaking Zentropa is concentrating on what it does best: - teaming key producers with a number of new directors.

We are pleased to welcome three experienced members of the Zentropa 'family': Peter Aalbaeck Jensen - CEO of Zentropa and co-founder; Anette K. Olesen - acclaimed new director of Minor Mishaps - winner at Berlin; Peter Hjorth - technical head at Zentropa - instrumental in adapting the camera technology for Dancer in the Dark and also in developing and establishing Zentropa's technical departments.

This is a once in a lifetime chance to meet and hear from possibly the most famous production house in Europe on it's output and it's unique approach to filmmaking - with the value added bonus of being able to pitch to Zentropa directly your project!!
