The Buhrle Collection visits the Kunsthaus Zurich

comunicato stampa

The Bührle Collection is among the most famous collections never seen, in Zurich and worldwide. Two years ago, however, when thieves made off with a major work by each of Cézanne, Degas, Monet and van Gogh (only two works have since re-surfaced), the low-profile Bührle was suddenly all the buzz. As well it might be, since the unique collection of about 180 pictures and sculptures, assembled under the aegis of a foundation, is among the most significant private collections worldwide.

The Kunsthaus show enjoys a special place in our programme, for two reasons. When it is shown next year in its entirety for the first time in over five decades and in the large exhibition space that Emil Bührle (1890 –1956) donated to the Kunsthaus and the city of Zurich, the Bührle Collection will serve to inaugurate our centenary year with a kind of dress rehearsal, since it is destined to be housed in its own special suite in David Chipperfield’s Kunsthaus extension, to open in 2015. The preview thus offers a one-of-akind opportunity to see the collection, which comprises masterpieces of French Impressionism by such luminaries as Manet, Cézanne, Monet and van Gogh and stretches all the way to Picasso, in its entirety, and to make a host of unexpected discoveries, the whole under completely different conditions than in the Bührle Collection’s traditional location – in a new light, as it were.

The provenance of the pictures collected by the Zurich-based industrialist and art historian, along with the circumstances of their acquisition, is addressed in our presentation and in the accompanying events. Documentation of the Bührle Collection, which is uniquely symptomatic of collecting in Switzerland during the 20th century, also includes the most recent events. The Kunsthaus is looking forward to this very special star turn!
