Showcase of works in various media including photography, moving image and 3D objects by participants of Brixton youth arts project led by arts professionals.
Urban Vision is a unique youth arts education project addressing social
exclusion through working with artists and young people in an alternative
creative learning environment  the 198 Gallery, Brixton. Led by arts
professionals with skills and knowledge in a variety of media, the project
engages young people from a broad range of backgrounds, reflecting the
cultural diversity of Lambeth and the surrounding boroughs. The young
people experience social and sometimes emotional exclusion from their
communities or find themselves under threat of exclusion from mainstream
education. Young offenders and young women identified as having low
self-esteem are among the groups currently benefiting from the Urban Vision
project.
The Urban Vision exhibition runs from 21 June to 30 August 2002 and is the
culmination of an academic year's worth of artwork in various media produced
by the young people participating in the project. The exhibition celebrates
their artistic achievements at the 198 Gallery through the summer months,
and will be launched with a fantastic event on 20 June to coincide with
National Children's Art Day. Lee Jasper, Advisor to London Mayor Ken
Livingstone, will be opening the event. Brilliant entertainment will be
provided by up-and-coming rap/R&B artists Commonwealth, Jazz Theatre dance
company, and DJs from Raw Material. Refreshments kindly provided by
Kentucky Fried Chicken and D-Bess Bakery complete the rich event.
The pioneering 198 Gallery rose from the ashes of the 1988 Brixton riots to
provide what was, at the time, the only space where black artists were
offered freedom of expression and young people encouraged to join in the
social and cultural regeneration of a marginalised community. The 198 has
grown in stature and reputation over the past 14 years, winning awards for
its innovative work. It has kept its ethos intact  in fact, it has
expanded its vision to reflect the multicultural communities that make up
Lambeth and the surrounding boroughs and carrying the commitment of the past
forward into the future.

established in 1988 after the Brixton riots to provide exhibition space for
black and other minority group artists. Now the gallery supports emerging
contemporary artists from diverse cultural backgrounds working with a
variety of media and issues within a multicultural context.
