Having recently exhibited in Tokyo and Mumbai, Natasha Law has gained international recognition for her stylized nudes.
Painted with industrial gloss on aluminium, the female figure in her work becomes a pretext for a complex composition of textures and colours.

In CLOSE/CLOSER, the artist furthers her investigation of body shapes and their potential for abstraction. Experimenting with new palettes, Law will present new gloss paint on aluminium works, as well as a number of smaller gloss paint on paper works, all featuring bright summer shades. Fluctuating between specific details and the whole figure, these new pieces linger between the abstract and the figurative, the intimate and the public.

The title CLOSE/CLOSER has both formal and emotional connotations; it alludes to the proximity of the painter to her models, as well as the different viewpoints and angles necessary to create an image. Law’s formal device also encapsulates proximity between people within a relationship and the ease of intimacy.

For the first time at the gallery, Law will also be creating large wall drawings of slender entwined figures. These wall drawings will spill out onto the gallery window, allowing the passerby to discover the show through a mesh of female bodies. Their lines, directly borrowed from preparatory drawings and the artworks on display, will provide an innovative backdrop, and hint at the demanding technical process involved in Law’s work. Usually starting with a line drawing, the artist explores various different possible ways to crop the image before reporting the lines onto the aluminium panel. The layers of paints are then applied one by one, in a completely dust-free environment. This time-consuming technique is the only way to produce the vibrant colours that have now become Law’s signature.

Natasha Law was born in 1970. She lives and works in London. Her recent exhibitions include I Put My Finger on Your, Paul Smith Gallery, Tokyo, Japan, (2009); Matches Art Project, Matches, London, (2008) and Romanticism Interrupted, The Viewing Room, Mumbai, India (2008) (with Natasha Kissell).

The private view is supported by Ruinart champagne
