Die Architektur des Beweises
galerie wieland is pleased to present a solo exhibition of the work of Frank
Hülsbömer, whose new photographs show views of auditoriums and seminar rooms at
Berlin's Charité Hospital and Humboldt University. The series of photographic
diptychs, executed at these two prestigious institutions, reveal the patina of
age characteristic of such well-worn public spaces that serve elevated social
and functional purposes. The dispassionate shots draw the viewer's attention to
certain minor details of the seemingly abandoned halls, whose formal neutrality
is quietly disturbed by only a few human traces, such as the partially wiped out
traces of chalk on a blackboard.
The coupled photographs always show a particular space from two opposing angles:
one from the point of view of the teacher, the other from that of the students.
Thus, the space where knowledge is presented and revealed is juxtaposed with, and
kept separate from, the space where knowledge is received and absorbed. In their
visual formality and structure, the diptychs allude to medieval altarpieces,
pictorial objects equally associated with places of shared and communal
perception and the offering of information. The public reception of knowledge,
whether disseminated via a lecturer or revealed by a pastor, is always a matter
of mediation.
Frank Hülsbömer, born 1968 in Münster, lives and works in Berlin, Warsaw and
Paris.
