Ines Rebelo

The Old Police Station, London

DIY (night sky experience). For this exhibition the artist has ambitiously dismantled a model Peugeot 306 to rebuild it within the gallery as part of a narrative of investigation and as a site-specific response to the former use of the building.

comunicato stampa

Recently four drawings by Inês Rebelo disappeared from an exhibition in London. Only one drawing from the series DIY (night sky experience) remained in her possession. Initiating legal action to maximize the possibility of recovering the drawings, the artist set about to discover the truth behind the presented facts, in the process raising questions about the value and nature of the missing artworks.

Interweaving a complex web of references from astronomy, legal disputes and the automobile industry, Rebelo’s DIY (night sky experience) invites the viewer to an experience somewhere between film and planetarium. Rebelo’s work exists in a carefully balanced state where conceptual rigour is combined with a poetic and stylish minimalism. For this exhibition Rebelo has ambitiously dismantled a model Peugeot 306 to rebuild it within the gallery as part of a narrative of investigation and as a site-specific response to the former use of the building.

This solo show is the first in a series selected by Anthony Gross for The Old Police Station, with Patti Ellis confirmed for September.
