Faits-divers - Photographies. In his Berlin exhibition, Klein presents parts of his 'Interior Spaces' and new landscape photographs as well as installations that go beyond the rectangular format and let the image spread to the showroom. Sven Erik Klein's artistic work is focused on the picture itself. His approach is deliberately not a serial or documentary one.
No more, no less than the broader view - that's what Sven Erik Klein's works show. For the first time, the artist born near Ulm is exhibiting his works in Berlin. In this exhibition he prefers huge formats, like the photograph "Les tomates" that is virtually tempting the viewer to approach it, even go inside it to pick one of the tomatoes.
The aesthetics of abandoned, neglected objects and places is the central point of his work. In his Berlin exhibition, Klein will present parts of his "Interior Spaces" and new landscape photographs as well as installations that go beyond the rectangular format and let the image spread to the showroom. Sven Erik Klein's artistic work is focused on the picture itself. His approach is deliberately not a serial or documentary one. Each photograph is a complete work of art that is tempting us to another perspective of abandoned interior spaces, landscapes, rusty old ships or thicket. Man is never seen in the picture and yet present for he's the one who created the waste land, factory ruins or ships.
"faits divers" translates as "miscellaneous" - irony by all means intended for Klein's works don't have an umbrella concept, no documentary distance - each picture works individually and integrates with the complete aesthetic works of the photographic artist.
Sven Erik Klein attended Nan Hoover's classes at the Rheinische Kunstakademie Düsseldorf as a visiting student and studied media art at the Hochschule für Gestaltung/ZKM in Karlsruhe where Marie-Jo Lafontaine, Günter Förg and Candida Höfer were his lecturers. He lives and runs a studio in Saarbrücken. In addition to single exhibitions e.g. in the Stadthaus Ulm or the Goethe-Institut Nancy, Klein's works were part of group exhibitions like "Last and Lost" in the Literaturhaus München, "Blow Up" at the Ulmer Museum or the Saarland Landeskunstausstellung. In 2009 he won the Monika-von-Boch-Preis für Photographie.
