From Abroad...to Singapore is the first solo exhibition in Asia from Award Winning
photographer Simon Carr. The exhibition highlights various people who have
made their home in the Lion City from countries as far away as Canada, France,
U.S.A, Australia, UK and Russia. In addition to the striking, humourous and
intense images, the exhibition is a personal journey of the personalities in the
photographs; revealing their experiences, hopes and dreams.
It is hoped that this exhibition will be one of the most talked about in 2010.
Simon Carr has been capturing startling images for over 20 years. His continued
use of film with no digital manipulation is rare in a photographer these days. The
photographs evoke the "Hollywood style" photographs of the 30's 40's and 50's
along with more contempory photographers such as Steve McCurry and the
intense gaze of Dianne Arbus.
Simon Carr is an award-winning portrait photographer and film-maker. He
experimented in super-8mm film-making whilst at school, then attended
'Crosswinds' intensive film course in London taught by Steven Bernstein
(Director of Photography for 'Monster' 2003 , 'Like Water for Chocolate'
(1992). After moving to Edinburgh he studied photography at Stevenson's
College, Edinburgh, then took up a job as assistant photographer at
Scotland's Cultural Heritage. During this time he appeared in 'Victorian
Values' by the 7:84 theatre company and went off to Summer Camp in
Maine, U.S.A to teach photography.
After moving back down to London and working as a Chef-de-Rang in the
Copthorne Tara Hotel in Kensington, Simon filmed a short drama
'Litterbugs', that was highly commended in the BAVA competition (British
Amateur Video Awards) and attended a feature script-writing course. After
narrowly-missed being killed by a bus seat that had been thrown out of a
bus window, Simon moved back up to Edinburgh and carried on with his
photography and script-writing. After starting work at a video-duplicating
company, and having a photograph chosen as part of the S.S.A exhibition
at The Royal Scottish Academy, Simon directed his first 16mm short film
'The Curious', which he also wrote and co-produced.
In 2002 he graduated from Edinburgh College of Art with a BAHONS. in
Visual Communication (Film and Television). He has had his photographic
work exhibited in the Red Door Gallery in Edinburgh and exhibited his first
solo exhibition 'Memories from the After-Life' at the Cameo Cinema in
Edinburgh. In 2005 he exhibited his second solo exhibition 'French
Undressing' at the Institut Francais d'Ecosse to great acclaim and followed
it up with a second exhibition 'French Undressing Deux' at the GaleryA1
later that year.
Simon Carr has worked as a stills photographer on around a dozen short
films as well as working for JUNK 72 FILM AND TELEVISION where he
worked on 'This Scotland' for Scottish Television and 'The Levelller's pop-
promo 'Wild as Angels'. He has also worked as an extra on two Channel 4
docu-dramas. He currently resides in Singapore.
