On the occasion of the 6th Berlin Biennale, Edge of Arabia presents Grey Borders/Grey Frontiers, the first exhibition of contemporary art from Saudi Arabia ever held in Germany.

Grey Borders/Grey Frontiers features the work of a new generation of Saudi artists working in various media.

The works combine installation, performance, photography, video and sculpture, addressing issues that are as much personal or domestic as they are geopolitical or global, providing a unique and unpredictable perspective on contemporary culture in the Middle East.

Its curator, Rami Farook comments, “with borders becoming undefined and frontiers wide open these works in some way take us through the ways society and its individuals act and react, think and feel, perceive and comment ... these artists turn our stereotypes into a reality, and our reality into stereotypes.” In travelling to Berlin, Edge of Arabia is set to amplify these important and pioneering voices and stimulate cultural and artistic dialogue in the heart of Europe.

Grey Borders/Grey Frontiers will be shown at Torstraße 1, one of Berlin's most iconic Bauhaus-‐designed buildings.

The ever-‐changing uses of this location reflect the complex cultural and ideological history of Berlin, and it is a fitting venue for this historic and groundbreaking exhibition in the Soho House, Berlin building.

Following celebrated exhibitions in London and during the 53rd Venice Biennale, in January 2010 Edge of Arabia announced its vision to showcase Saudi contemporary art around the world. Over the next four years and supported by the Abdul Latif Jameel Foundation and in partnership with the Saudi Arabian General Investment Authority, Edge of Arabia will cross borders to Europe, Asia, North America and the Middle East.

Edge of Arabia is an independent grassroots initiative founded by British and Saudi artists in 2004.
Its aim is to promote and empower contemporary artists from Saudi Arabia.

Artists include:
Shadia & Raja Alem, Manal Al-‐Dowayan, Abdulnasser Gharem, Hala Ali, Maha Malluh, Ahmed Mater, Faisal Samra, Sami Al-‐Turki, Ayman Yossri Daydban.
