L’ex scuola d’infanzia di Bruzella è stata convertita in uno spazio espositivo che ospiterà mostre fotografiche sostenute dalla Fondazione Rolla. Le immagini appartengono alla collezione privata di Rosella e Philip Rolla, che in questo modo desiderano condividere con il pubblico il proprio interesse e la propria passione per l’arte fotografica.
Un percorso per lo più tematico presenterà una selezione di opere moderne e contemporanee, rivelando le motivazioni che hanno portato alla scelta degli autori, delle immagini e la loro collocazione nello spazio espositivo. La prima mostra, Josef Sudek. Cacciatore di magia, è dedicata al fotografo cecoslovacco (1896-1976).

Josef Sudek è un autore enigmatico e affascinante, attratto da visioni misteriose e cariche d’aura, da dettagli che rendono ogni foto un unicum, e da una tecnica spesso solo apparentemente imperfetta, soprattutto nella stampa. Sudek ama i grigi indefiniti, considerati spesso dai suoi contemporanei come una carenza di stile, da lui enfatizzati soprattutto nella scelta delle stampe a contatto. Seppure privato del braccio destro durante la Prima guerra mondiale, la fotografia è divenuta il centro del suo lavoro. Sudek sa attendere, anche per ore, a volte per interi giorni, il momento giusto.

Nel suo caso non è un eufemismo dire che scriva con la luce, quella luce ricercata che caratterizza ogni suo scatto.
L’esposizione è composta da 25 fotografie vintage, che spaziano dai panorami alle vedute dalla finestra dello studio, allo studio stesso, fino alle nature selvagge o ai giardini visti come fondali di uno spettacolo, perfettamente studiati anche se apparentemente naturali.
Introducono le fotografie vintage due portfolio. Si tratta della raccolta di 13 immagini a lui intitolata ed edita nel 1976 (anno della sua morte) e delle 18 fotografie di Profily/1, pubblicato da Panorama nel 1980 (rivista ceca a cui Sudek collabora dal 1931).

1896 Il 17 marzo a Kolín nasce Josef Sudek. A due anni rimane orfano di padre e si trasferisce a Nové Dvory con la madre Johanna e la sorella Božena.
1913 Ottiene il diploma di rilegatore e si cimenta nelle sue prime prove fotografiche.
1916 Sudek è sul fronte italiano. A causa dell’esplosione di una granata perde il braccio destro. Anche durante la guerra continua a fotografare.
1917 Ritornato dalla guerra non può riprendere l’attività di rilegatore e si dedica completamente alla fotografia. 1921 Sudek è ammesso alla Scuola Statale di Arti Grafiche. Nello stesso anno è accolto nell’Associazione boema di Fotografia Amatoriale vincendo il primo premio nella sezione paesaggi.
1922-27 Scatta delle fotografie nella casa dei Reduci alla Invalidovna.
1924 Con gli amici fotografi Funke e Adolf Schneeberg fonda la Società Fotografica Boema.
1927-28 Fotografa la Cattedrale di San Vito (la cooperativa artistica Družtevní pràce pubblica un portfolio di 15 immagini) e affitta il suo primo studio. Qui ogni martedì incontra gli amici per ascoltare musica, altra sua grande passione.
1927-36 Collabora con Družtevní pràce diventando il fotografo ufficiale di Panorama (Sudek non disdegna i lavori commerciali).
1932 Prima mostra personale a Praga.
1958 Si trasferisce in un nuovo studio.
1976 Il 15 Settembre muore a causa di un tumore.

The ex-kindergarden in Bruzella has been converted into an exhibition space for photographic exhibitions promoted by the Rolla Foundation. The photographs are from the private collection of Rosella and Philip Rolla who have decided to share their interest and passion for the photographic medium. The prevalently thematic series will present a selection of modern and contemporary photography and will investigate the Rolla’s motives in the selection of artists, of the images themselves and of their placement in the gallery space. The first exhibition, Josef Sudek. Cacciatore di magia, will be dedicated to the Czechoslovak photographer (1896- 1976). The exhibition inauguration will be held on Saturday, June 12, at 11:00 AM.

Josef Sudek is an enigmatic and fascinating artist, he is drawn to mysterious and moody visions, to the single detail that renders each photograph unique and to a technique that is often only apparently imperfect, above all in the printing. Sudek loves undefined greys, tones often considered by his contemporaries as lacking in style that he actually emphasises in his choice of printing contact prints. The loss of his arm during the First World War did not put an end to his interest in photography, on the contrary, it made photography the centre of his work life. With great patience, Sudek set about waiting, at times for hours, or for whole days, for the right moment. In this case it is not a euphemism to assert that he writes with light, with the specific light that characterises each release of his camera’s shutter.

The exhibition includes twenty-five vintage photographs ranging from panoramic shots, views from Sudek’s studio window, of the studio itself, to photos of wild nature or of gardens that seem like scenery for a show, apparently natural but actually perfectly arranged.
Two portfolios will introduce the vintage photographs. One is a collection of 13 images named for him and edited in 1976 (the year of his death) and the 18 photographs from Profily/1, published by Panorama in 1980 (a Czech review that Sudek worked with from 1931 until his death).

1896 Born on March 17, in Kolín. At the age of two his father died and he moved to Nové Dvory with his mother Johanna and his sister Božena.
1913 He earned a diploma as a bookbinder and began his first experiments with photography.
1916 Sudek is sent to the Italian front. He lost his right arm as a result of a grenade explosion. He continued taking photographs during the war.
1917 Having returned from the war he was unable to go back to his work as a bookbinder and dedicated himself exclusively to photography.
1921 Sudek was accepted to the National School of Graphic Arts where he studied with Karel Novák. In the same year he was welcomed into the Bohemian Association of Amateur Photographers and won first prize in the landscape category.
1922-27 He took photographs in the Invalidovna War Veterans Home.
1924 With his friends, the photographers Funke and Adolf Schneeberg, Sudek established the Czech Photographic Society.
1927-28 He took photographs of Saint Vitus Cathedral (Družtevní pràce publishing house produced a portfolio of 15 images) and rented his first studio. Every week, on Tuesday, he met with friends in his studio to listen to music, his other great passion
1927-36 He collaborated with Družtevní pràce and became the official photographer of Panorama (Sudek did not disdain commercial work).
1932 First personal exhibition in Prague.
1958 He moved to a new studio.
1976 Sudek died of cancer on September 15.
