Finding the Funny in Contemporary Art. A Sense of Humor examines the many faces of humor in art, whether lighthearted tongue-in-cheek work, biting witticism that stabs at the politics of today, or quirky objects that call to mind the familiar. Through installations, paintings, sculpture, photographs, video, and audio, the 22 featured artists arrive at humor from many different points of view. Textile artist Richard Saja (NY) takes an irreverent approach with his toile pillows. Using needlework, he embellishes traditional pastoral scenes to include cheeky vignettes of clowns, pirates, punks, and presidents.
Having had his designs accepted by the U. S. Mint for the New York and Rhode Island state quarters, Daniel Carr (CO) spoofs the popular collectors' editions with his own Parody State Quarters. Minting these alternate quarters himself, Carr illustrates less idealized versions of their commemorative counterparts.
Erika Rothenberg (CA) employs sharp sarcasm to critique political, economic, and social establishments through her greeting card series and signage works. Having a previous career in the advertising business, Rothenberg is familiar with media strategies, using them to shocking yet humorous ends.
Other artists whose works are featured include: Erwin Wurm (Austria); José Carcavilla (Chile); Barnaby Barford, Matt Stuart (England); Laurina Paperina (Italy); David Shrigley (Scotland); Tim Hawkinson, Jean Lowe (CA); Bill Amundson (CO); Gregory Scott (IL); Jeffu Warmouth (MA); Fanny Allié, William Wegman (NY); Joel-Peter Witkin (NM); Steven and Billy Blaise Dufala (PA); Charles Krafft and Mike Simi (WA).
