EX3, Centro per l’arte contemporanea di Firenze inaugura giovedì 1 luglio 2010 la personale di Ragnar Kjartansson (Reykjavík, Islanda 1976), artista e performer poliedrico, il cui lavoro coinvolge molteplici mezzi espressivi: il video, la scultura, la musica, il disegno, la pittura alla cui origine si trova sempre l’aspetto performativo. Le sue opere si distinguono per la compresenza di sentimenti contrastanti: tristezza e felicità, orrore e bellezza, dramma e humor. Dotato di una straordinaria capacità di coinvolgimento emotivo, Kjartansson, dà vita a complesse e, allo stesso tempo, rudimentali mise en scène, tese a fare coincidere, sulla scia dell’esperienza romantica, arte e vita alla ricerca “di una soluzione artistica all’enigma dell’esistenza”. In occasione della personale di EX3, sarà presentato, per la prima volta in Italia, il terzo episodio della serie Me and My Mother, appena concluso, a fianco dei primi due “episodi” della stessa serie.

L’opera fa parte di un progetto in progress, iniziato nel 2000, che prevede la realizzazione, ogni cinque anni, di una performance, documentata in video, dove, a ricorrere, sono gli stessi attori (l’artista e la madre) e uno stesso gesto, denigratorio ed enfatico. Lo sputo della madre sulla faccia del figlio, ripetuto nel tempo, oltre a innescare una catena di riflessioni di natura psicanalitica, racconta, in maniera grottesca, la sostanziale ambivalenza di tutti i legami di affezione, la loro intensità e la loro distruzione. Apparentemente dissacratoria, l’opera di Kjartansson è in realtà un omaggio non convenzionale alla madre e allo stesso tempo una riflessione malinconica sul tempo e sulla morte.

Nelle sale laterali del Centro, saranno inoltre presentai altri lavori video, tra cui Death and the Children (2002) e Satan is real (2004) che riprendono, con analoghi toni dissacranti, la complessa relazione con la morte, e due installazioni composte da una serie di dipinti: The Raging Pornographic Sea (2006) e The Blossoming Trees performance (2008) che riflettono sul ruolo dell’artista, teatralizzandolo e mettendone in luce l’ambiguo rapporto tra natura e artificio. Ragnar Kjartansson vive e lavora a Reykjavík (Islanda), dov’è nato nel 1976. Oltre alle numerose mostre negli Stati Uniti e in Europa si ricordano le recenti partecipazioni alla Biennale di Venezia del 2009 (Padiglione islandese), alla settima edizione di Manifesta (Rovereto, Trentino-Sud Tirolo, 2008) e alla seconda Triennale di Torino (2008).

Ragnar Kjartansson - Me and My Mother

On Thursday, July 1, 2010 EX3 Center for Contemporary Art in Florence will inaugurate a solo exhibition by Ragnar Kjartansson (Reykjavík, Iceland 1976). A multifaceted artist and performer, he employs a number of expressive means in his work: video, sculpture, music, drawing, and painting which all depart from some aspect of performance. His works are characterized by the simultaneous presence of contrasting feelings: sadness and joy, horror and beauty, drama and humor. Gifted with a remarkable ability to involve our emotions, Kjartansson creates complex and, at the same time, rudimentally staged settings, that aim to unite art and life, following in the wake of Romantic experience, seeking an artistic solution to the enigma of existence.

For the occasion of his solo show at EX3, for the first time in Italy, the artist will present the third episode of the Me and My Mother series, recently completed and ready to flank the first two episodes in the same series. Begun in 2000 the work is part of a project in progress which calls for the realization, every five years, of a filmed performance. Each time the actors are the same (the artist and his mother) with the same disparaging and emphatic action. The mother spitting in her son's face, repeated over time, not only inspires a chain of psychoanalytic-type thoughts, but also narrates – in a grotesque way – the substantial ambivalence behind all bonds of affection as well as their intensity and their destruction. Apparently desecrating, Kjartansson's work is really an unconventional homage to the mother and, at the same time, a melancholic reflection on time and death.

Other video works will be presented in EX3's side halls, including Death and the Children (2002) and Satan is real (2004) which, with similar desecrating themes, pick up the complex relationship with death. There are also two installations composed by a series of paintings: The Raging Pornographic Sea (2006) and The Blossoming Trees performance (2008) which reflect on the artist's role, bringing out its theatricality and highlighting its ambiguous nature between nature and artifice.

Ragnar Kjartansson lives and works in Reykjavík (Iceland) where he was born in 1976. Apart from his many exhibitions in the United States and Europe, we recall here his recent participation in the Venice Biennale 2009 (Icelandic Pavilion), in the seventh edition of Manifesta (Rovereto, Trentino-Sud Tirolo, 2008) and in the second Turin Triennial (2008).
