Beyond the Sublime

comunicato stampa

A subjective look at painting over the last 100 years

Artists:
Hippolyte Daeye, Thierry de Cordier, Koenraad De Dobbeleer, Valerius de Saedeleer, Dirk De Vos, Ilse DÕHollander, Lucio Fontana, Mary Heilmann, Ann Veronica Janssen, Peter Joseph, Guy Mees, Roger Raveel, Gerhard Richter, Ugo Rondinone, Albijn Van den Abeele, Koen van den Broek, Gustave Van de Woestijne, Dan Van Severen, Michael Venezia and Christopher Wool.

The production of the summer biennial of painting is, just like two years ago, a collaboration between the museum Dhondt-Dhaenens and the Roger Raveelmuseum. This project does not intend to bring together the youngest and hippest painting exploits in confrontation, but aims to present a subjective investigation into a variety of strings in the art of painting of the past hundred years. Every two years, a specific angle is chosen to ensure an original approach of the subject.

This second edition takes a journey through what is considered sublime painting of the last decades. These artists, each in their own way, undertook an aesthetic quest for the mystery that is called «sublime». Despite the ambitiousness of the endeavour, the challenge for every artist is different: while the one believes in the grand gesture or the overwhelming composition, the other sets out to seek, through ascetic simplification, what might perhaps remain unfindable for ever.
In this way, the exhibition becomes a very intense and introspective experience in which the potentially sacral and sublime significance of art is placed in a new perspective.

We consciously chose to develop a different thematic approach in each institution. The Roger Raveelmuseum focuses on the introspective character of painterly methods and chose economy of means as its starting point for the selection. The museum Dhondt-Dhaenens initiates a surprising dialogue between the works of ten different artists. Two painters from their own collection, Gustave Van de Woestyne and Hippolyte Daeye, formed the basis for the selection.

Additionally, Ugo Rondinone installed his imposing sculpture series Sunrise East in the MDD garden.
