HOWARD MEHRING: Classical Abstraction
paintings from the Vincent Melzac Collection
September 12 - October 25, 2002
The Art Department of the Catholic University of America is pleased to
announce the first solo exhibition of works by Howard Mehring ( 1931-1978)
in nearly twenty years. Mehring, who has been called the "sleeping giant" of
Washington Color Painting, studied with Ken Noland at Catholic University,
where he received his M.F.A. in 1955.
>From 1958 to 1968, Mehring created innovative abstract paintings in
distinctive all-over and geometrical styles. His canvases, best known for
their breathing, pulsating color, have been exhibited in landmark shows such
as the 1964 Post-Painterly Abstraction at the Los Angeles County Museum of
Art, curated by Clement Greenberg, and the 1966 Systemic Painting at New
York's Guggenheim Museum curated by Lawrence Alloway. Mehring's works are
also featured in the permanent collections of many major museums including
the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York and National Gallery of Art,
Washington, D.C.
The paintings in the current exhibition are on loan from the estate of the
late Vincent Melzac - former Administrative Director of the Corcoran Gallery
of Art - and noted collector of abstract painting. As Mehring's patron,
Melzac assembled what remains the largest single collection of the artist's
work. Magnificent and historically important examples of the artist's work
are included in this exhibition including The Key, 1963 and Primal, 1961-62.
In the picture: 'the Key', 1963.
This exhibition was curated by art historian Jamie L. Smith. A catalogue is
