Sulla scia del successo della mostra Mediated experience: Olafur Eliasson's books (che ha registrato 5000 presenze in sole due settimane) e del catalogo edito per l'occasione TYT [Take Your Time], Vol.2: Printed Matter, la prossima edizione di Artelibro Festival del Libro d’Arte presenta la mostra The Infinite Library che coinvolge due giovani artisti internazionali: Daniel Gustav Cramer (Germania) e Haris Epaminonda (Cipro).

La settima edizione di Artelibro (Bologna, 24-26 settembre 2010), che si svolgerà a Palazzo Re Enzo insieme con la 23a Mostra Internazionale del Libro Antico, avrà come tema principale Il libro antico, raro e d’artista e vedrà tra i protagonisti i librai antiquari, gli editori e gli stampatori di libri d’artista, oltre agli artisti stessi. Dopo il successo delle iniziative dedicate al libro d’artista nelle passate edizioni, tra cui le mostre Artist’s books by Sol Lewitt, (2009), BOOKS! Dagli anni Sessanta a oggi (2008), Primo amore. La collezione di Carlo Della Grazia (2006), Artelibro 2010 intende continuare nella ricognizione e valorizzazione di questa produzione artistica che dal primo Novecento giunge al contemporaneo. Bologna offrirà ai visitatori il meglio del suo straordinario patrimonio librario in un itinerario speciale attraverso le Biblioteche ed i Musei della città, oltre a ospitare dal 20 al 23 settembre 2010 il 39° Congresso Internazionale ILAB-LILA (International League of Antiquarian Booksellers-Ligue Internationale de la Librairie Ancienne).

Nel contesto della città di Bologna e di Artelibro, The Infinite Library sarà presentato in due degli spazi storici più suggestivi: la Biblioteca Universitaria e il Museo di Palazzo Poggi, dando luogo ad un dialogo stimolante tra patrimonio culturale e sperimentazione contemporanea.

Concepito da Daniel Gustav Cramer e Haris Epaminonda (protagonista quest’anno di una mostra personale alla Tate Modern) ed iniziato nel 2007, The Infinite Library è, come recita il titolo, un progetto in via di continua evoluzione. Nelle stesse parole degli artisti: “E' un ampio archivio di libri, ognuno creato tramite libri già esistenti, numerati come fossero nuovi volumi. Ogni volume ha una sua struttura propria riassemblata ogni volta a partire da un materiale originale e dalle possibilità che questo offre. Mentre la biblioteca si espande con l'aggiunta di nuovi libri, ogni singolo volume porta con sé il potenziale di diventare il centro di una installazione spaziale, una estensione del soggetto, della forma, del contenuto, del ritmo e della logica del libro”.

Il progetto rappresenta uno degli esempi attuali più interessanti di dialogo tra arte contemporanea ed editoria, intesa come materiale stesso della ricerca artistica e come contesto di riflessione concettuale sulla sua stessa natura, la sua storia e il suo futuro.
The Infinite Library è stato finora presentato secondo modalità diverse e attraverso l’utilizzo di diversi materiali e supporti tecnici (dal video alle vetrine, dal collage all’archivio) in gallerie e istituzioni internazionali. La mostra bolognese sarà l’esposizione più completa finora avvenuta del progetto. In continua crescita, The Infinite Library costituirà infatti, nei prossimi mesi, una collezione di circa 40 volumi.

Artelibro Art Book Festival is pleased to present the exhibition The Infinite Library, a project of Daniel Gustav Cramer (Germany) e Haris Epaminonda (Cyprus).

The seventh edition of Artelibro (Bologna, September 24th-26th, 2010) will be held in Palazzo Re Enzo with the International Antiquarian Book Fair. Main theme of this year will be The Ancient, rare and art book that will see antiquarian booksellers, publishers, printers, and the artists themselves as protagonists.

After the success of 2009 exhibition Mediated experience: Olafur Eliasson's books (which registered 5000 visitors in only two weeks) and the relative catalogue TYT [Take Your Time], Vol.2: Printed Matter (both edited by Luca Cerizza), and analogous initiatives such as Artist’s books by Sol Lewitt (2009) and BOOKS! From the Sixties to nowadays (2008), Artelibro 2010 will continue in the recognition of the relationship between publishing and contemporary artistic practices. Bologna will offer visitors the best of its extraordinary books heritage in a special route through the city's Museums and Libraries, besides hosting the World Congress of Antiquarian Booksellers from 20th to 23rd September 2010.

In the context of Bologna and Artelibro, The Infinite Library will be presented in two of the most suggestive historical places - Biblioteca Universitaria and Museo di Palazzo Poggi - resulting in a stimulating dialogue between cultural heritage and contemporary experimentation.
Conceived by Daniel Gustav Cramer and Haris Epaminonda (protagonist of a solo show at Tate Modern, this year) and started in 2007, The Infinite Library is an evolving project. As the artists say: “It is an extensive archive of books, each created by existing books, numbered as if they were new volumes. Each volume has its own structure that is recombined each time from the original material and the opportunities it offers. As the library expands with the addition of new books, each volume brings the chance to become the center of a spatial installation, an extension of the subject, the form, the content, the rhythm and the logic of the book”.

The project represents one of today's most interesting examples of dialogue between contemporary art and publishing, is intended both as the material of artistic research itself and as a framework for reflection on its nature, its history and its future. Drawn on “traditional” book forms and especially on its specific typology and chronology,  this project will also examine the production, distribution and circulation of images nowadays.The Infinite Library has been presented so far in different ways and by using different materials and technical supports (form videos to display windows, from collages to archives) in international galleries and institutions. The exhibition in Bologna will be the most complete project’s show up till now, presenting a collection of about 50 volumes.

The exhibition aims to create a side project called The Infinite Reader.

The Infinite Reader is a series of publications by Archive Books and edited by Luca Cerizza, which follows the presentation of The Infinite Library project by Haris Epaminonda and Daniel Gustav Cramer. For each presentation/exhibition of the project, a publication that represents a deepening of the issues raised by The Infinite Library will be edited: production, reproduction and circulation of images and information, cataloguing and archives, the book as a linguistic form, the myth of library, the concept of infinity, etc. ... Texts can be ordered for the occasion or reprinted, and will range between different typologies (from the essay to the fiction) to form a potentially infinite library that will grow parallel to the artistic project. Instead of providing a collection of texts, a compendium finished once and for all, The Infinite Reader is an open form that updates constantly without following a definite order. Each volume will contain a visual section edited by Haris Epaminonda and Daniel Gustav Cramer.
The first release of the series is scheduled for mid September 2010 in conjunction with the exhibition The Infinite Library.
