Miriam Vlaming’s new work group „true tales“ connects details of body parts with objects of
Vlaming’s everyday life, many of which are very personal and related to her family’s history. After
years of figurative and group portrait painting, she now dissects the human body and the objects
around her, taking them to pieces and concentrating on the traces of life they expose: Vlaming
closely examines injuries, damages on body parts and things as if trying to find the stories they tell.
A central motive shows a pair of oversized feet, covering almost the whole canvas. Even though
firmly placed in the painting, them being covered by plasters indicates hardship and violation. Feet
play a fundamental role in a person’s life as they carry them ahead– at the same time, they are
vulnerable and sensitive witnesses of one’s personal progression.
This exhibition’s objects are close to become pictograms – so simple, yet still dreamlike, they evoke
associations, stir up memory and may hence seem to some like parts of forgotten fairytales.
