Chris Cunningham

three video works: All is Full of Love, flex and Monkey Drummer

comunicato stampa

Born 1970 in Reading (UK). Lives and works in London.
Chris Cunningham has worked in the film industry since the age of 17. Beginning as a special effects artist, in 1995 he shocked the world with the intense six-minute music video "Come To Daddy " for The Aphex Twin. He went on to become internationally acclaimed as a director of music videos, produced for friends and collaborators such as Richard James (The Aphex Twin), Squarepusher, Portishead and Björk. He also worked with David Fincher on Alien3, illustrated the British comic 2000 AD (under the name Chris Halls), sculpted Sylvester Stallone's Judge Dredd costume in 1995, and worked for one and a half years with the late Stanley Kubrick on his on-off sci-fi project A.I.
Cunningham's video works are evidently influenced by sci-fi classics such Ridley Scott's Blade Runner or David Lynch's Blue Velvet, Twin Peaks, Lost Highway and William Gibson's novels.
Cunningham declares himself to be obsessed with anatomy, the human body and cybernetics. He often cites George Lucas's Star Wars as influential: "It's all white costumes against black walls - everything's very classy." (RES)

TENSTA KONSTHALL is pleased to present the artist and filmmaker Chris Cunningham's first solo exhibition in Sweden. We will show three video works, All is Full of Love, flex and Monkey Drummer.
All is Full of Love (1999), one video projection of 4min, made in collaboration with the singer Björk, is the artist's last music video project. This video shows, with an almost clinical elegance, two cloned, robotic Björks singing and falling in love, caressing and almost mirroring each other whilst a third robot is assembles their mechanical body parts. The video relates, perhaps, to Narcissus's classical ego dream and reflects a desire for purity and bodiless perfection beyond the boundaries of gender and sexuality. All is Full of Love was shown at The Venice Biennale (2001) and at The Istanbul Biennale of the same year. Flex (2000) a video projection of 12min, is the first work made by Cunningham to be presented within the context of the visual arts, and is an exploration of anatomy and sexuality. The images are abstract, serene and beautiful - and at the same time violent and explicit. A male and a female body and their shadows are caught up in the primitive and perpetual choreography of passion, desire, love and hate. The relationship between the imagery and the electronic music composed by Richard D. James to fit the images rather than the other way around is crucial to the piece.
Monkey Drummer (2001) a single video projection of 2 min, was premiered at the 49th Venice Biennale. Ironic and funny, "Monkey Drummer" is a video of a monkey laughing and grimacing, marking time with the sound of music.
