Giovedì 23 Settembre la Galleria Alessandro Bagnai, inaugura How a picture grows a world, mostra di George Woodman.

George Woodman: “fotografo da molti anni e pittore da sempre”, presenterà in mostra quattro grandi immagini in bianco e nero risultato del lavoro fatto sul dipinto di Johannes Vermeer, A Maid Asleep (1657) al Metropolitan Museum of Art di New York. Questi lavori saranno accompagnati da alcuni versi della giovane poetessa americana Iris Cushing.

A Maid Asleep è un dipinto che Woodman conosce bene perché lo ha ritratto più volte nei molti scatti fatti negli ultimi venti anni, ed è solo recentemente che si è dedicato alla stampa di un corpo di lavori che coinvolge diversi modi di vedere Vermeer.

Per la mostra Woodman ha realizzato una serie di fotografie in cui ritrae una modella in posa davanti alle foto del quadro del noto artista fiammingo, questa ”fotografia nella fotografia” crea una sorta di dialogo temporale fra il tempo del dipinto ed il tempo dello scatto. Infatti, è solo attraverso il rapporto di contrasti tra la modella, che rincarna e simboleggia la cameriera di Vermmer, che Woodman riesce ad attualizzare il quadro del “vecchio olandese”, che ha oltre 350 anni.

In occasione della mostra verrà presentato il libro How a picture grows a world, edito dalla Galleria Alessandro Bagnai, pubblicazione che raccoglie 10 fotografie di George Woodman e una poesia di Iris Cushing. Questo lavoro è il risultato della collaborazione tra i due artisti americani che sviluppano testo e fotografie in un costante rapporto di rimandi tra parola ed immagine.

On Thursday 23rd September the Alessandro Bagnai Gallery opens How a picture grows a world, a George Woodman exhibition.

George Woodman, “a photographer for many years and always a painter”, will put four large black and white images on display, outcome of the work based on the Johannes Vermeer painting, A Maid Asleep (1657) at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. These works will be accompanied by a few verses by the young American poet Iris Cushing.

A Maid Asleep is a painting that Woodman knows well because he has portrayed it several times in the many photos taken in the last twenty years. It is only recently that he has dedicated himself to a set of works that includes various ways of looking at Vermeer.

For this exhibition Woodman has taken a series of photos in which a model poses in front of the painting by the well-known Flemish artist. This “photography within photography” creates a kind of temporal dialogue between the period of the painting and the period of the photo shoot. In fact, it is only through the relationship of contrasts with the model, who embodies and symbolizes Vermeer’s waitress, that Woodman manages to update the painting by the “old Dutchman”, over 350 years old.

At the exhibition the book How a picture grows a world will be presented, published by the Alessandro Bagnai Gallery, collecting 10 portfolios of George Woodman and a poem by Iris Cushing. This work is the result of the collaboration between the two American artists that develop the text and photography with constant cross-reference between word and image.
