Origin of the Dot. Paintings from the Vincent Melzac Collection. The selection of stained canvases in this exhibition spans the dates of 1959 to 1971. These works demonstrate the evolution of Downing's bold signature style of colorful grids of dots, beginning with the early all-over fields influenced by fellow painter, Howard Mehring, and culminating in the 'dials' and 'rings' that brought him international renown.

Conner Contemporary Art is pleased to present works by Color Painter Thomas
Downing (1928-1985) in the first solo show dedicated to this important
Washington artist in over seven years.
The selection of stained canvases in this exhibition spans the dates of 1959
to 1971. These works demonstrate the evolution of Downing's bold signature
style of colorful grids of dots, beginning with the early all-over fields
influenced by fellow painter, Howard Mehring, and culminating in the 'dials'
and 'rings' that brought him international renown.
Downing's paintings are featured in the permanent collections of many major
museums including the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, the
Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, D.C. and the Norton Simon
Museum, Pasadena, California.
The works in this exhibition are from the collection of the late Vincent
Melzac - former Administrative Director of the Corcoran Gallery of Art - and
noted collector of abstract painting. As Downing's long-time patron, Melzac
assembled what remains the single largest collection of the artist's works.
A fully illustrated catalogue with a previously unpublished essay by Thomas
Downing is available.
A general reception will be held Friday, October 4th from 6-8pm.
