Cinema is more than film alone, as Almost Cinema proves every year. At this festival organized by Vooruit and the Ghent Film Festival, artists from a variety of disciplines offer the audience a different take on cinema. With performances, concerts and an exhibition with surprising installations, they dissect the ordinary cinema experience as they experiment with sound, image, light, space and movement.
Many artists come to present new work at this year's edition of the Almost Cinema exhibition. They will encourage the visitors to explore alternative landscapes and discover instruments that manipulate the way we see things.

Exhibition curated by Eva De Groote (Vooruit).

Pablo Valbuena will present a new, breathtaking light sculpture for the city of Ghent, commissioned by Almost Cinema & Lightfestival Ghent. Sound artist Zimoun has been invited to work on a new in situ creation as well: 'Prepared DC-Motors in Cardboard Boxes'. Bram Vreven will exhibit his brand new kinetic sculpture 'Spin'. Also on display is the internationally acclaimed kinetic sculpture 'Studies.for.Longing/Seeing' by Kerstin Ergenzinger, which transforms a stack of rubber sheets into an ocean, organ or a futuristic landscape, 'Static' by Wim Janssen, using light filters and handmade pixels to create white noise (premiere) and 'Reversed Blinking' by Ief Spincemaille, that offers the audience a chance to freeze the moving outside world in a picture (Belgian premiere). Eric Joris and his collective of artists and scientists Crew will demonstrate their newest interactive tool 'Bolscan', a rotating moon-like segment that can be used to scan the action in an omni-directional video, one slice at a time.

PERFORMANCES
Christoph Ragg & Joanna Bailie will play with the concept of the camera obscura in 'C.O. Journeys'. Zach Oberzan, a top-notch actor attached to the Nature Theater of Oklahoma, will present his own version of a Jean-Claude Van Damme movie. 'Stillivingrooms' by Andrea Belfi & Mirco Santi will bring old Super 8 films to life in an unusual setting. Duncan Speakman invites a big audience to take part in his subtlemob 'As if it were the last time'. "Imagine walking through a film, but it's happening on the streets you live in."
Also on the programme: Naomi Kerkhove & Ruben Nachtergaele, Ricky Seabra & Dirk Verstockt, Octurn feat. vs. Legoman, My Little Cheap Dictaphone.

SYMPOSIUM
KASK, Vooruit and the Ghent Film Festival organize 'The Documentary Real', a symposium on the ambiguous relation of documentary film to reality, on Thursday 21 October from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. To what extent can a reel of film capture reality – if this is possible at all — and when can we say that it calls a new reality into being? Do not most films oscillate between 'document' and 'argument'; that is, between representing, rewriting and creating reality? Speakers are: Cis Bierinckx (curator, artistic director Beurshouwburg Brussels), Stella Bruzzi (film theory, University of Warwick), Edwin Carels (curator, art theory, KASK), Marc De Kesel (Philosophy, Radboud University Nijmegen, Artevelde Hogeschool Gent), Katerina Gregos (curator), Johan Grimonprez (artist and filmmaker), Steven Jacobs (Art history, KASK & Antwerp University), Vincent Meessen (artist), Jasper Rigole (artist) and Duncan Speakman (artis t). With support from VAF & Flanders Image.

Organized by Vooruit Arts Centre & the Ghent Film Festival.

Almost Cinema would like to thank the Flemish authorities, the Province of Easter Flanders, the City of Ghent and the sponsors of the Vooruit Arts Centre and the Ghent Film Festival.
