Venezia. Solo show
The Old Police Station is proud to present a solo show of new paintings by the artist and writer Patricia Ellis.
In the book The Invisible Cites, the writer Italo Calvino puts forward the argument that the city of Venice is a pure fiction. Venice, Calvino states, is a frozen city and a perverted fantasy of itself. Walking around the medieval bridges and canals of what was once Europe’s most decadent destination the idea of a 1 to 1 museum and that exists purely for the purpose of tourism is clear. While Disneyland was made from scratch to achieve this effect, in Venice, they simply had to stop building. And so they did.
Thus the world’s largest simulacrum was born. It is these thoughts in mind that Patricia Ellis set out to create her latest series of paintings. Ellis, an avid reader of history books, explores the depiction of Venice with all its contradictions and alluring seductions. The paintings are rendered in the artist’s trademark "folk baroque" styling, mixing a bold and a seemingly naive use of paint application. Though this very deliberate casualness, the images seek to lull the viewer into a false sense of confidence or understanding. But, much like Venice itself, the heavily distorted surfaces belie stories of intrigue, opulence, and grotesquery.
Patricia Ellis is an artist and writer exhibiting regularly in the UK and internationally.
During Frieze week the gallery will be open additional times and the exhibition will be accompanied by a series of late evening views.
