Dopo numerose mostre nelle istituzioni di tutto il mondo e in Italia al Castello di Rivoli, alla Biennale di Venezia, alla Fondazione Ratti e alla Galleria Civica di Trento, Raffaella Cortese è orgogliosa di presentare l’installazione di Joan Jonas: Reading Dante IV.

Reading Dante IV , esito di una ulteriore riflessione sul lavoro Reading Dante, è una lettura personale ed originale dalla Divina Commedia di Dante Alighieri che ha impegnato gli ultimi 3 anni di lavoro di Joan Jonas. Ogni volta in cui è stato proposto Reading Dante, l’artista americana è sempre intervenuta compiendo cambiamenti e ampliamenti nella performance e nell’installazione.

Prendendo in prestito piccoli frammenti del testo originale della Divina Commedia, Jonas traduce e traspone le allegorie medievali e la storia che tutti conosciamo in una sua reinterpretazione composta da performance, suoni, disegni, video e installazioni. L’artista dinamicamente rende, attraverso Ie sue performance, l’idea del viaggio e delle esperienze dei diversi personaggi della Divina Commedia. Se, inizialmente, gli elementi che utilizza possono sembrare disparati in realtà formano una narrazione unitaria gestita coreograficamente dall’artista e dal suo riconoscibile immaginario.

La prima versione di Reading Dante è stata presentata alla Biennale di Sidney nel 2008. Successivamente Joan Jonas l’ha ripresentata alla Triennale di Yokohama e all’Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum di Boston. In quest’ultima occasione ha filmato i video che ora sono parte integrante dell’attuale versione dell’opera. Durante la Biennale di Venezia del 2009 ha installato e messo a punto la seconda versione Reading Dante II, che ha mostrato al Performing Garage a New York all’interno di Performa 09. Da questa seconda versione newyorkese ha selezionato alcuni elementi che sono stati inseriti nella versione Reading Dante III dando vita ad un work in progress intrigante e senza fine.

Joan Jonas (b. New York, 1936) è considerata un’artista di riferimento per l’arte americana del dopoguerra. Jonas lavora con diversi media: dalla performance all’installazione al video alla scultura ma anche pittura e fotografia. Laureata al Mount Holyoke College in 1958 e con il MFA presso la Columbia University nel 1965, attualmente Jonas insegna al Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Nel 2009 le è stato assegnato il Guggenheim’s first annual Lifetime Achievement Award.

Jonas ha avuto retrospetttive al Queens Queens Museum of Art, New York (2003), Staatsgalerie, Stuttgart Germany (2000), e al Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam (1994). I suoi lavori sono stati inclusi nella Documenta V (1972), VI (1977), VII (1982) a Kassel, Germany. Documenta XI (2002) le ha commissionato l’installazione con performance intitolata Lines in the Sand che fu riallestita alla Tate Modern a London, e al Kitchen di New York nel 2004. Jonas ha esposto I suoi lavori anche in numerosi spazi internazionali tra cui: Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlino; Sigmund Freud Museum, Vienna, Austria; Dia:Beacon, Beacon, New York; Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, Madrid, Spagna; Museo d’Art Contemporain de Barcelona, Spagna; Le Plateau and Jeu de Paume/Hotel de Sully, Parigi, Francia; Renaissance Society, University of Chicago, Chicago, Illinois.

Raffaella Cortese is pleased to present the first solo show in the Milanese gallery by acclaimed American artist Joan Jonas.

Reading Dante IV draws inspiration from Dante’s fourteenth-century Divine Comedy, a reoccurring topos of Jonas’s work since 2007. Each performance and installation becomes increasingly layered as the work transforms and develops. The first installation and performance of Reading Dante was at the 2008 Biennale of Sydney. Later that year Jonas performed the work at the Yokohama Triennale, and also performed a reading at The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston, from which filmed excerpts are now incorporated into the current Dante video. Jonas was featured in the International Pavilion of the 2009 Venice Biennale where she installed Reading Dante II. Most recently, the artist presented Reading Dante II at the Performing Garage in New York as part of Performa ’09, and selected elements of this performance are featured in Reading Dante III and reviewed in the Italian Reading Dante IV.

Jonas translates the medieval allegory, borrowing small fragments of the text and greatly reinterpreting the story through performance, sound, drawings, video and installation. The artist dynamically visualizes the journey of the characters, merging their experience with her own through footage of travels and performance. The plethora of elements employed by Jonas, which initially may seem disparate, collectively form a complex, choreographed, and imaginative vision in the artist’s personal aesthetic language.

Joan Jonas (b. New York, 1936) is a seminal figure in American post-war contemporary art. The artist works in several mediums including: performance, installation, video art, sculpture, filmmaking, photography and painting. She received her BA from Mount Holyoke College in 1958 and her MFA from Columbia University in 1965. Jonas currently teaches at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). In 2009 the artist was awarded the Guggenheim’s first annual Lifetime Achievement Award.
